I like me esl 63's but at the back of my mind I often wonder about planars with woofers. I have the oportunity to buy a pair of the 8b's for about the same price, or a bit less, ao I wondering if anyone has hears a comparison between them and coundoffer an opinon
Thanks in advance
Steve

Completely different approach and overall sound, with some common characteristics.
My observations are below

ELS63 vs LFT-VIII

Differences:

Smoother - Neutral
Top end subjectively reticent - more prominent
No low bass - goes quite deep
Limited maximum SPL - can play quite loud
Slightly easier to drive - needs slightly more power
Narrow sweet spot - not that narrow sweet spot
Maintenance relatively expensive - practically no maintenance
Fairly expensive - fairly cheap
More cohesive - less cohesive from bass to low mid-range.
Need quite a space behind to work - need less space

Common points

Both have quick natural instrument attack
Both are very coherent speakers particularly from low mid-range up
Both are very musical/engaging speakers.
Both work best with tube amps
Both need some space around

Having owned the Eminent and driving it with Pass X250 amp, and now owning a pr of Rebuilt PL ESL-57's.

The only thing I can say is, The LFT-8b has more impact. I agree 90% with all the points the other poster said. I do have to say that my ESL's play bass very well. The tone is low and accurate.

Clarity and Coherence are sublime on the Quads...

If your quads are older and not been upgraded, I would spend the money there......Just my 2 cents

Stale,

So the ET8s have "sweet spot" that is fairly wide? Could give examples other than Quads, lets say B&W 802, or any other great dynamic speaker?

Thanks and regards....
