They sound too bright in the treble will that calm down after 100 hours?.
Or do I need to add a set of the resistors they gave, one pair is blank and the other has text?. What one should I try first.? They do sound so different than a box speaker.😀

Congrats, they look great...

100-200 hrs...yes they should settle down...my 3.7's took 200-300 hrs to settle in...I ran them 24/7...low volume at night...75 dbs during the day when at work, and cranked them up to 85+ dbs when I was home...

I am personally not a resistor fan...many Maggie guys run them full time...just try them...

What is your amp?

Let us know what you think as they break in...
Enjoy...
thanks
Mark

My experience with NIB 1.6s was that breakin consisted of CAPACITOR FORMING within the first 20 hours. You MIGHT hear artifacts of that like image shifting side-to-side and abrupt level changes.
After that? 50 to 100 hours, sort of depending on level and source material, to finish getting the BASS right. The mylar would appear to stretch A LITTLE and you are done.

Bright HF is a subset of SETUP. My 1.6s are happiest with the speakers 'crossing' behind me. I sit about 11 feet from the speaker and they cross about 16feet behind me. ALSO, tweeters IN or OUT will play into this. You should experiemnt with that before trying resistors or chokes or a seance.

If the speakers stood STRAIGHT UP, I'd also be tempted to experiment with the Pole Piece TO the listener. That's the way Maggies WERE probably a decade and a half or more ago. All Maggies these days are MYLAR to the listener, except for the Push / Pull versions like the 20 series.

If they sound too bright put the resistors in. "Break in" is not going to solve that issue.
They supply a pair of 1 and 2 ohm resistors, which are pretty coarse adjustments actually when you're dealing with 4 ohm drivers.
If you need to get some 1.5 ohm resistors, then purchase some.

Dave.

As some have suggested, they need some break-in time both physically and electrically. Actually, I'm of the believe that EVERY new speaker needs it, regardless of what a manufacturer says.

With ANY new speaker that comes into my living environment (be they hi-fi or musical instrument- I play bass guitar and do repair/modifications), I have two CDs that I run- one of ocean surf (it's much more pleasant than white/pink noise). I will usually run that for a full day or two.

My next step is to run a thunderstorm CD at a moderate volume. I usually run this for a full day on a Saturday while I'm out doing groceries, or in the past, lawn/yard work. That tends to take care of "limbering up" the woofers/panels. The differences from out of the box to 20-40 hours can be quite dramatic, and more so with Maggies...

BTW, Rkyo had a bunch of "Environment Series" CDs years ago, and that's where both the ocean surf and thunderstorm come from. You might find them on eBay. The good thing, like I said, is that they sure beat running noise generators all day long!

Turn your treble control on your receiver to 10 o'clock! I used my receiver set for that for a couple years until I added DSP power amp(s)

The ULTIMATE SEASHORE? and 'THE OPTIMIUM AVIARY'?

I think the ones I had were from Syntonic Research but memory could be playing tricks on me.

I also remember they'd play at ANY speed.

With the Thunderstorm Track you could SMELL the OZONE! HEY! That's the AMP!

The two I have are "A Day On Cape Cod" and simply "Thunderstorm". I can look up the catalog numbers when I get home this evening if it really is pressing (you aren't a completest for sea shores and storms, are you??? LOL)...

P.S.- I also have an "Enviroments" LP of a rolling brook through some forested area on one side, and a springtime meadow on the other- never listened to it yet, as it was part of a collection I picked up some years ago...

I have owned six pairs of Magneplanar speakers, four with wire tweeter voice coils and two with QR tweeters. To my ears the versions with wire tweeter voice coils have a more pleasing and natural top end versus those with QR tweeters. Whether this perception is attributable to the wire voice coils or the crossover used in these models I do not claim to know.

I have not noticed any change in HF balance as the speakers age.

I was unable to achieve high performance with the MG-1.6QR in spite of physical tilting, toeing, or resistive padding of the tweeter. I will say that the 1.6 produced the highest SPL (perceived and measured) of any speaker I have owned. Unfortunately they were the most fatiguing speaker I have owned as well. The MMG is my least disliked of the QR types, I do not find them fatiguing at all.

FYI: I have not recently listened to any "true ribbon tweeter" Magneplanars and I have no opinion on them.
