I now have a set of Magneopan 1.7s in my study where I used to have a set of Magnepan mC1s + 2 Dynaudio subs. The Magnepan 1.7s are very different - more filled out from top to bottom than the MC1s + subs were. It feels as if the music snuggles up to you and place you in the middle of it rather than having you listen from the sideline. I am very happy about it.My wife, who has said that the Magnepans will never come into our livinroom has heard what they can do, and now seems closer to thinking that keeping such enjoyable speakers in my small study is rather a pity. For now I'm playing coy ...

In my study with the magnepan 1.7s I have a set of ancient Naim: Bolt down Nac 12 (dual railed + Alps/Snaps PSU + Nap 160. This set-up has plenty of juice to fill my study with glorious music. Later this month I will get a Nap 32 back from service, and in that I plan to put some newly made Ryan Sound Lb boards that should lift the performance of the pre to Nac 82 levels. I will see.

In my livingroom there are only a set of homeless Linn Ninkas + a 2 way Linn Aktiv Tunebox. They will have to go. I have sold my Naim Nac 252 + 2 x Nap 200 set-up, and are now awaiting John Westlake's LakeWest VFET-amps + LakeWest MDAC2 L3 DAC( used as Pre). They won't be here for another 3-4 months. But then I have my dream set-up (I hope): CAPS Music Player + LakeWest MDAC2 + LakeWest VFET + Magnepan 1.7s or Magnepan MC1 + 2 Dynaudio subs. I know which Magnepan I would prefer to have in there.

I live in Aarhus, Denmark by the way. I'm 52 on Nov. 11, so about time that my dream set-up came my way.

Kind regards,
Peter

You will have a lot to enjoy...Every day I find pleasure and musical surprise with them....There are wonderful historical organs in your home city. I have many of them on cd and records, and they sound wonderful with the 1.7's.. They are good enough to give a good sense of the bottom octaves are :without the ability to go there. From 50hz up they will thrill you. I use all solid state amp and pre-amp and an inductor to better reach the lower octaves or organ recordings...Cheers Ut

What is an inductor? A special crossover?
Sorry for being ignorant.

I don't miss the low notes in my small study. But I suppose that I may use two subs when the Magnepans are used in the living room at some point.

As for organs, that is, way outside my expertise, although I enjoyed the Bach organ music in the Nikolai Kirche in Leipzig last summer. Minister Führer had just departed three days before, and the mood and the Bach blended admirably to make a lasting impression on both me and my wife. Very moving.

The Nikolai Kirche played an integral part in the Leipziger demonstration in the Fall of 1989 that eventually helped the citizens of GDR to break down the Berlin Wall and, start the process of reunification with West Germany.

An inductor is simply a coil of wire which has been 'wound' to have certain electrical characteristics.

For crossover use, you have a choice of iron core, which are generally smaller, and AIR core, which while larger physically, also are difficult to 'saturate' or overdrive / clip, in a sense.

Magnepan uses Iron core since they take up much less space, for those crossovers IN PANEL.

Inductance is one measure of 'reactance'. Just read the first paragraph of the link.

You will find on the Asylum ,threads that discuss the use of an inductor(5222) vs standard 1 ohm resistor to best balance the acoustics in your room .These speakers are a thrill after a lengthy break in period, and after persistent experimentation with placement.I use powerful mono block amps 1000 watts(powerful class b amps are very inexpensive in the US) and it really pulls together the lower bass. Pianos are revelatory . I have a large room and have no need for sub woofers at this point.(My neighbor might kill me) For hard rock I move the speakers somewhat closer to the wall. Nice visual combination for the speakers you chose.Goes good with Burgundy wine.

Hi

The link at the bottom of this post is Al Sekela's Choke Tweak. This, I think, is what the other poster was referring to about an "inductor". Al also left a link for the first post on the subject. Excellent reading!!

Also, welcome to the AA.

What are the dimensions of your study? When I hear 'study' I imagine a smaller room and I'm contemplating a pair of 1.7s for my small listening room. I've received advice all over the map as to whether they would work or not.

Thanks old guy and others.

I use a piece of solid copper speaker cable where the "metal bridge used to be" - and a better fuse that was tehere when i bought the 1.7s. My 1.7s cannot be bi-wired.

Hi LineSource.

My study is very small: 4 meters by 2,1 meters. I have the Maggies on either side of a window with a desk in front of it on the 4 meter long side. They are about 0.6m from the (windowed) wall behind them, toed in, and only about 1.4 meters apart. On the end walls respectively left and right of the Magggies there are book shelves. My serious listening poition is about 1.50 meters away from the Maggies in a triangle. As I write this, I am sitting between them at the desk and the sound wraps itself around me. There is no bright top at all which i sometimes experienced with my Magnepan MC1s that were placed on the wall behind me, again some 1.4 meters apart.

Behind me there is nothing until I reach the wall. I moved my piano and subs from that wall. This measn that it feels as if I have a lot more spavce in here than before.

This is far from ideal, but it is a matter of having them here or not at all. I took a chance, and second hand I figured that if they were impossible in here, I could either try to persuade my wife to let them into the livingroom or sell them on (with a bleeding heart).

I think you must be ready to change your set-up in your small room if need be. There are 0.7s coming out, but I am not changing my 1.7s.

Kind regards,
Peter

I have now bought a little used Butler TDP2260 hybrid amp. I found one in Denmark and had to buy it. I hope to receive it within the next week. I should be a good one to use with my Maggies.

Does any of the inmates use one of these?

Cheers,
Peter
