I got a pair of esl63's on eBay. One needed work and so I dropped it at my technician and took the good one home to lay with. I just connected it and it has aloud fluttering sound, abit like a machine gun. It is connected to amp but I havent even got up to switching on the amp yet. I am assuming this is a panel problem- it is the loudest "bad" noise I have ever heard from an electrostatic

Yesterday, I had a high pitched sound which later turned into a high mid-range sound along with some very faint clicking on and off.

I spoke with Kentaja who asked what the humidity has been like. Well, it's been very high here. He confirmed that ESL-63s are prone to all kinds of squealing when they don't like the humidity.

He suggests waiting a few days as the humidity dissipates and then seeing what I have. If the noise goes away, voila. If it continues, then, we may have a panel going bad.

That kind of sound are also likely to come from a ripped membrane.
Most of the repairs I have had come in with that phenomena have had ripped membranes.
High humidity will also make this noise as it comes from high voltage discharge between membrane and stator.

Cheers!

The one who succeeded was the one who didn't know it was impossible.

Had that noise from a pair of Maggie SMGs, but likely a whole different problem..., posted on September 8, 2014 at 14:27:47

In my case?

I was in the Navy at the time. My system was NAD CD Player, NYAL Minuet preamp, Adcom 555II amp, and the Magnepan SMG speakers.

In port (obviously) and after a long duty day, I got back to my barracks room, I popped a CD into the player, and then hopped into a nice hot shower.

Moments later, I was startled out of the relative peace by what seemed like gunfire.

I ran out of the shower & was met by an even more deafening staccato.

Turned everything off, perhaps more to keep from going deaf than to protect the equipment!

After toweling off & inspecting EVERYTHING in the audio chain, it turned out that a fault in the NYAL preamp (fried capacitor & a few other parts) was pushing a nice "machine gun" waveform through my loudspeakers at pretty close to clipping levels on the Adcom amp. On the plus side? The amp and speakers were just fine. I managed to get an ARC LS3 from the local dealer in San Diego to replace the NYAL unit just before the glowing Stereophile review, so it was at the introductory price, and I was VERY happy with it. :)

This Monday evening I was testing a tube preamp board for which I had just bought and modded a power supply. It actually ran fine for the first time the day before, on Sunday. This time around, however, the dreaded machine gun sound started coming from the right channel, a Maggie.

"Great", I thought. "I can't even mod a stupid power supply without causing a short circuit anymore!" Thankfully, it only took me a minute to figure out my real mistake.

I forgot to turn off a wireless router that was a mere 5" away from where I temporarily placed the preamp board for testing. On Sunday, I was smart enough to turn off all nearby electronics. On Monday, I was was back to my typical "dumb self".

Check for any hidden sources of RF/EMI interferences.

I'm puzzled by your posting. You wrote that you took the "good one" home, but had problems. How did you know it was "good"? Had you auditioned the speakers prior to purchasing? If so, and the speaker played all right then, that would seem to indicate that, as others have suggested, there might be a problem with other electronics somewhere.

Here's hoping whatever it is can be simply remedied. Keep us posted, and good luck!

George
