Good Day to All:

Recently bought a used pair of SMGs for a good price. One thing that is/was odd that both panels are labeled 'Left' on the small aluminum plate where the fuse and banana jacks are. It was noted as such by the seller but I did not think much about it at the time.

My understanding is that all Magnepans are mirror sets.(?) Given this, does the fact that the two I have are label 'Left' (and it does appear to be the same in terms of the bass and mid-high sections when a flashlight is shone through it), does this affect the audio characteristics - e.g., image, sound stage, left to right positioning, center image, etc.?

Other than the larger than normal banana jacks, they sound great.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks. ;o)

Sincerely,
Kingsley.

How about their Serial Numbers? I believe ordinarily a pair should appear
something such as 12345-L and 12345-R or 12345-1 and 12345-2. How do yours go? (I'm not asking about their actual serial numbers, only their style, substituting 1 2 3 4 5 for their real numbers.)

Hi Norman:

Thanks for responding. Will have to check the serial numbers/style later and get back to you.

Sincerely,
Kingsley.

I'm very sorry about having to let you know, that listening to two left (or right) Maggies as a stereo pair will most likely cause audible issues with soundstaging and also tonality, since the asymmetry in driver layout is also reflected in off axis frequency response.
Sorry again, Marin

Thanks marin. It's kind of what I suspected even though for the most part it sounds great. The center image is shifted a little to the left and requires a slight head/body adjustment to the right to compensate. Staging still seems ok although the presentation is more up front rather than mid-hall to laid back and not as much front to back depth as accustomed to.

Sincerely,
Kingsley.

Apologies for the confusion. Took a closer look at the labelling on the aluminum plates and they a re labeled 089614-L and 085614-R. This would indicate that they are a mirrored set. (Jumped to conclusions based on sellers remark.)

Sincerely,
Kingsley.

IE. experiment with placing the panel marked 'L' on the RHS of the room and vice versa.

This will change the relative position of the tweeters ('in' vs. 'out') - in your room, you will prefer it one way.

Regards,

Andy

Yes. Duly noted and will try tweeters in versus out. Thanks., posted on July 23, 2014 at 14:23:12

When I bought my FIRST panels, some MG-1, they, too were marked L and R.
That was the best way to place them except in ONE very special / awful room where they worked best swapped L//R.

Now, since the 'Big Swap' to pole piece to the front wall and Mylar to the listener, It is NOW a good idea to experiment with ALL FOUR logical placements.

Pole piece front or back AND Tweeter IN or OUT.
Too much is never enough

I got it very cheaply a while back for a mono system in the shed, but due to renovations (and complicated by being a bit of a hoarder and procrastinator.
So, maybe we could come to a arrangement..I could buy one of your L ones or you could buy my right one. even though I am in Australia, postage on a single speaker wouldn't be prohibitive price wise. I got it shipped from Europe for well under $200 I recall.
Of course, I will have to test it and find the parts (stand and cover
