I do consulting work in the Cast Stone/precast concrete industry, I am on my way to NYC tomorrow, won't be back until Saturday the 19th, speakers are ready to be picked up on Friday....

So...that means I won't have them until Monday the 21st...AAAARRRRGGGGG...
I really tried to talk the guy in letting me fly out on Sunday, but said they were going to be working this weekend, so he would prefer me there tomorrow....

Dropped them off Tuesday morning, brought a little meat and cheese tray along with sparkling non-alcoholic wine....(greasing the wheels)...

Sue and Sandy, (repair ladies), told Shelia when I got my RA number...that they would squeeze me in....Shelia said to them...do you want some cheese with that Whine...Hence the wine and cheese gift...

I got some good laughs with that....

I DID NOT ASK ANYTHING ABOUT THE UPGRADE!!! Other than joking I would be checking with my friends at the NSA...one guy in the production office said, they don't even what we are upgrading...

Speaks volumes....
thanks
Mark

Your kindness has no bounds...thank you so much, but bring your credit card when you pick them up, I did not pay the $500 as of yet...

Talked to Shelia this morning, about not picking them up until the 21st. She said they are in good hands, they came back to the Mother-Land...we laughed...

Thanks again
Let us know how they sound

$500 for a pair of 3.7i's sounds like a steal !!!

IN NYC : You might want to check with LYRIC HI FI on Lexington and 83 St as long as you are in NYC. If anyone has 3.7's up and running they do... Their display room is very revealing and I learned a lot about the 3.7's there.

If you ever find yourself at Lyric, seek out Igor. He sold me my Maggies almost 2 years ago and was a gentlemen and a knowledgeable salesperson. I just heard from a 3rd party that he recently upgraded to 20.7's, he had 3.7's.

I also must work today and tomorrow, unfortunately. I wanted to extend you an invitation to watch the back nine at my home here on Long Island. A small and cozy dedicated theater/music room, all Maggie's in 5.1.

Alas it won't happen, maybe next time you are out our way.

You work hard you deserve the 3.7i .My intuition tells me they are going to come with a slightly fuller sound-(more bloom)... with solid state equipment they might need that...I heard them long after I bought the 1.7's which are much more forgiving.. I still use an attenuator(Al Sekela's tweak)..The 3.7's are another league.. What ever they do it will be great...

THEY ARE CLOSED TODAY!!!

This may sound crazy, but I went out of my way to get back to MN before my scheduled Saturday return, JUST to get my 3.7i's before the weekend...
(I put in 80 hours in 6.5 days...putting in a QC program for all 3 shifts they run and installed new procedures with-in their processes)

Got Sheila's voice mail this morning, that said we are closed this Friday 19th and will be back on Monday the 21st...pressed every option that Magnepan has on the phone...no answer....

I am tempted to drive over to Magnepan, put on my fence jumping shoes, bring bolt cutters, leave a check and take my Maggie's home...20 minute drive....

It is not uncommon in MN, that companies give employees Good Friday off...It never registered with me that they might be closed today!!??!!

After the flight from hell, (flight was canceled out of MacArthur Airport on Long Island, had a 90 minute white knuckle cab ride to LaGuardia, got to my terminal, then found out my flight had moved to a DIFFERENT terminal, the plane was of course over booked, they wanted to bump me since I got ticket the night before, said "I will be on this flight", got a middle seat next to a guy that could not put down either armrest, he got super mad when the stewardess made him put down the aisle armrest before take-off, then proceeded to elbow me in the head a dozen times during the flight, he had 1/3 of my seat and never said a thing after elbowing in the head several times...), all of this BS to get back here a day earlier, just so I could get my Maggies before the weekend...NOT

I want to thank Stustan for the invite last Sunday to come to his home, to watch the Masters...too kind...this board is just full of good people...

So....I did everything I could, JBEN, to expedite this process...to no avail...
thanks
Mark

Stustan...yeah...you are right...BUT I was so stoked to do some serious listening this weekend...I am having trouble watching my TV, or should I say listening to my TV speakers...after having everything running through the rig...you get spoiled fast...Hence your HT/Music set-up...once again...thank you for the invite...was a chilly week out on Long Island...

They got 10"s of snow in the twin cities on Wednesday night...still has not melted as of yet...this winter just does not want to give it up...
take care
Mark

Called Shelia this morning...put me on hold to check on my speakers...said they are still ripped wide open and should be ready mid-week...

She could hear in my voice that I was disappointed, explained they had Friday off...which I said good for you, I called Friday morning and found that out...she said "now don't go into the DT's...we will have them done soon"...I said you might have to talk me off the ledge...she said no problem, just give her a call...she will talk me down...we laughed...

It is hard for to get mad at her...spending many years at a similar size small manufacturer...where middle management wears several hats...so slack will be cut...from me anyways...

thanks
Mark

WICKED!!! Mark, you are listening to one of the CDs that I took along several times for auditioning the 1.7s and 3.7s! Chris Isaak's "Forever Blue" is well recorded and mastered. It has a variety of passages that can "tell things".

With it, in those days, the only thing that I did not hear the 3.7s do as well as I expected was the impulsive bass. Keep in mind that it was a demo set that the dealer kept for months in a decent room and hooked up to good gear...including a Sanders Magtech power plant...errr, I mean power amp.

Yet, I don't need nearly as much power in my room to get the stuff I missed. Right now I am listening to the CD and remembering some things. For example, playing now is "The End Of Everything". In this room, the modded MMGs play its really deep bass rather well (I am not using a subwoofer). Even at this moderate volume, the bass punches my chest slightly, my jeans shake and my feet feel the concrete slab impulse transfers. Even the sofa cushions transfer vibration at times. It is clean low bass that does not sound distorted or forced.

As far as bass, the same happens here with "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing", the one you mention. However, with it being the first piece in the CD, the initial "shock" is really the amount of ambiance captured, as you well observed. Bad bad thing INDEED! LOL, in this smallish room, this recording + my system simply ignore the boundaries. The walls cease to exist and 3D imaging, along with ambiance, over-impose themselves in a larger venue. It can be even more impressive with 3.7s.

On this above, the 3.7 in the demo room were always MAJOR champions and did no less than what I expected. In fact, they were better than any other large Maggies I've ever heard. The Magtech power amp allowed them to take full control of the larger (than mine) room. Whereas at home I've had to work hard to squeeze out my prized 3D imaging and soundstage, the 3.7 accomplished this with ease. I still remember the impressive "Bad Things..." soundstage ambiance in the demo room. With other music, imaging was solid enough that one felt like plucking some elements off the soundstage.

My take was that given half a decent chance in a really good room, the 3.7 could deliver a whole large cathedral...and if needed, tell where each person was seated in each pew, LOL!.

So, my only little peeve was the lack of enough dynamic punch in the 3.7s. Two different large premium power amps drove them in the months I went to evaluate them as they matured and broke in. Never did I get to hear as much dynamic punch as I know can be obtained from some planars. To be fair, it could have been the demo room itself.

It was NOT a major loss to me, however. There are plenty more charms to be had from the regular 3.7. Of course, paired to the delightfully clean bass that the normal 3.7 can already deliver (not HUGE but strong and less distorted) a punchy dynamics improvement would be sweet!

You'd have to wait for a break-in of the new mods but, if Magnepan "fixed" this little inability to deliver dynamic "punch", it should be awesome. Few folks expect this from planars that have no aid from added cone woofers. Yet, they can do it.
