I'm very pleased with the Croft separates. The phono stage is as good as people say. Glen Croft uses 57's, so it makes sense his gear really makes them sing.

So it's an all-Brit system, Rega, Croft, and Quad. No more scones for me, Mater, I'm going to fly in my aeroplane.

Nice set up. I have always liked Croft's offerings.

Have you had the ESLs refurbished?

The full Monty from Wayne Picquet.

They're the best pair of 57's I've ever heard.

I was very impressed by the reviews, especially by how taken aback JA was by the far less than competent measurements. I was laughing outloud literally.

Isn't it clear by now that we are measuring the wrong things?

Do the power amps employ a similar tube driver as the integrated?

If I recall correctly JA didn't say he liked the sound either and he would have if it had appealed to him. I find that good measurements often don't ensure good sound but really bad ones should at least be an alert. And then we all like our own colorations. One persons colorations a re another's cup of tea and vice versa. I may not always agree with JA but I usually do and I always have respect for him.

Actually, I was reading JA's reviews back in the UK hifi press - he was always reliable and often favored things that appeal to me. But he is no tube-o-phile.

I would expect that works quite nicely with Quads. A medium power SET also works VERY nice with Quads.

Can you tell me what the impedance range is for the Quads. The best sounding amp I have heard on a pair of STAX ELS-F81s was a pair of Vacuumstate DPA-300B monos but the STAX are quite special with a VERY high impedance over most of the frequency range. I had extremely good results also with the KR Audio VA350i...it made both the STAX and my Acoustats sing like angels!

That amp was originally a great match for the ESL's, the updated or modded ones are even better. You can find them for under $1000.

I ran a newer ST70 into Quads 15 years ago and was unimpressed.

That's the separate pre/power (two boxes) version of the integrated. $2800 MSRP for the set. The pre is identical in looks to the integrated.

Quad 57's vary impedance by frequency from 2 to 32 ohms. Yeah, a lot of amps just can't do it.

Anyone ever try a conrad-johnson MV-50 with ESL's(57)?

If so (or not), any problems with reliability?

Thanks!

Manley Tiny Triode 50W is good for driving with ESL 57. It's like driving a FUN car like Masarati.

If you prefer the feeling of driving a big and stable car like Bently, then a EAR 549.
