I had the bass panels of the Tympani 3's opened up and they have cross braces that go directly against the mylar and the wires on the mylar. Can these be removed without damaging the mylar? These cross braces do no exist on the Tympani 1D's that I have seen.

Actually, I have never seen cross braces mounted on top of the wires on any Magnepan model.
Are You sure that this has not been made by some "home brewer?

Show some pictures!

These were purchased from the original owner who never touched anything. It looks like the original socks were never taken off. I will try to call Magnepan regarding this because I wonder if the original Tympani 1U also had this feature.

Do they partition the diaphragm like the tuning dots? I think I've seen a picture of that.

Sounds like you should ask the factory what to do. If they're partitioning the diaphragm to break up the resonances, they might be glued down.

Baranyi,

Are your Tympani III looking like my IIIA? Eight panels, three way?

Here is a picture of two bass drivers.

Roger,
My Tympani's look exactly like yours in even the vanilla grill cloth. My bass drivers look like yours except they have cross beams that go over the mylar and wires. I wonder if my version was a bit earlier? I will try to call Magnepan to see if they put the cross beam in or if this pair was somehow altered. Bob

Sorry but no. Mylar is probably worn from age. Made fixure/jig to remylar Tymps at home. Frt is just too expensive to ship 4 or 6 panels nowadays.

It seems that the Tympani III and IIIA basses are different. A friend bought a Tympani Bass Speaker, serial numbers are lower than mine. Yes, his older ones have the braces glued to the diaphragm. Unfortunately, two of the drivers Buzz. I have also seen pictures of the midrange drivers of the Tympani III and IIIA, also different diaphragms. Of course, these can be repaired but you need to know how to tension the Mylar.
