Maggie 1.6QR set screws: allen wrench

I have 2 pairs of MG 1.6QR speakers and have lost one of the allen wrenches. I'd like to have a supply 'em handy.
Anyone know the size of the supplied allen wrench and where can I get more of them? My local hardware store sells only allen wrench "sets" with about a dozen in a set. I don't even know if the one I need is Metric or SAE so I don't want a whole set.
Thanks and Happy New Year.

You may have to go to a "bolt supply house" for loose allen keys, although a set should do you fine. Try the yellow pages under fasteners. Hopefully you'll find one that is willing to sell in small qty to the public.
As for the size, can't recall. If nobody else replies I'll check tonight when I get home.

I believe the size is 3/16 inches.
I ended up getting a set of allen wrenches that have screwdriver handles making the operation much easier. There is a website that sells single wrenches but with a $10 minimum order.

I'm sorry the size is 3/32 not 3/16.

Time to install some REAL binding posts. Who ever thought up that original Maggie idea (insert tiny allen wrench, turn less than half-a-turn, wiggle wrench loose & repeat) must have a masochistic streak in him somewhere. The parts Magnepan uses are so cheap (read inferior) almost anything will be an improvement. Just think, no more fiddlin' around with that lil' wrench-stooped over trying to connect speaker wire. The first thing I did on my MMG's was get something like this (see link), take the terminals out of the plastic cup and put them in my Maggies. Now you needen't be as cheap, but you'd be hard pressed to find replacement posts of lesser quality than Magnepan uses.

I can't believe I'm saying this.

They aren't TOTAL junque. They CAN be dealt with. No they aren't Cardas. Yes they are cheap. But it can be done. Almost anything can be done with faith. Just stick your golden banana plug in there and (lightly) tighten down the setscrew. That wasn't so hard. was it?

Just lightly do the setscrew and figure that maybe you want to replace them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of screwing with Maggie. Some may say she is the mistress of evil. Others will say the goddess of delight.

But this relationship will not be boring, I can guarantee it.

As suggested by another member.

Machine screw # 8-32x1/2 with either Phillips/Robertson head has been my choice in dealing with this antiquated design handy when experimenting with biamping.

My plug of choice where set screws are no longer required is shown above.

When I first got my Maggies (MMG's), I had no bananas on hand and tightening those little set-screws onto speaker wire was maddening. I had wanted a "quick listen" before going to work the morning after they were delivered. Those stock terminals may have saved my job seeing as how they pissed me off and I went to work, swearing they'd be soon gone. I now now know a quick listen would have turned into much more =^]

I assume you mean for the speaker wire terminal comnections. I lost mine recently and I called Magnepan and they sent me two of them gratis.

Maggies, because you can never be too thin!

Use a 'ball end' allen wrench
Break it loose with the short end, flip the tool around, install the ball end so you can
spin the bolt/setscrew out with your thumb.
don't make me post a picture!

Picture of ball end wrench,
You can be 'off center' and they will turn fine.
Not for full torque, but after the screw/setscrew is 'broken loose'.

Ricky M,
The supplied allen wrench has, at the end of the long leg, a ball end. You don't have to turn the wrench 1/2 turn and remove. After you loosen the set screw which should be less than 1/2 turn, insert the long leg into the set screw. The ball end lets the wrench act like a universal joint, you can loosen the set screw by holding the wrench tilted away from the speaker and you can turn full turns until the set screw falls out and you loose it.

I have just measured the allen wrench that came w/my MMGs it is either a
5/64" or 2mm both work. It is probably a 5/64" since that is approx 1/1000" larger. 3/32" is to big, will not fit.

I crimped on wire ferrels on the end of 14ga. Monster cable and they fit very nicely.

The definitive answer is 5/64". Period. Let the confusion cease for once and all.

actually the idea is sound if you take the internal wire into the connector tube and make direct contact with the stripped end speaker wire and crimp them together with the set screw.

for speed tightening but NOT FINAL tightening, you might want to send away for a 'Ball End' wrench set IF it includes the 5/64 size.
You don't have to be 'straight on' to use it, but should use a regular 'L' Key to do the final tighten and the first loosen.

You can get what you need at the link, and Ala Carte, at that.
