I've got a pair of Tympani I-D that need a LOT of TLC right now. Both have damaged mid/bass panels.

One was damaged when the police entered my house by pushing an air conditioner in through the window because they thought my front door was booby-trapped. Cops' first comment after going through my stuff - "You have PATENTS?!?!?" Yes, Virginia, computer programmers can like guns and Harleys.

The other apparently just died of neglect while in storage for 3 years.

One mid/bass sock is missing, and the L-bracket feet are missing.

Does Magnepan still do a reasonably priced refurb on these if you ship them to White Bear Lake? I have the boxes.

I had a pair that I'd given to a friend in Honolulu. He wasn't using them (for 10 years!) so I had him send them to WBL to be refurbished as a wedding present for a friend of mine in in Nashville. I also had the covers changed from black to white (a wedding present, you know ;-) Magnepan did a terrific job (for about $250 I think it was), and shipped them to Nashville. And although his wedding plans fell through, somehow, my friend thinks they should be his speakers all the same (and now he's not using them either!)

They were in better shape than yours (it sounds like) but they're great speakers IMO; and if you really love them and don't mind spending a little money, you can probably have the tweeters upgraded to a quasi-ribbons which would be a pretty big improvment.

Magnepan probably cannot (i.e., will not) do the repairs. They will, however, send you everything you need to do them yourself (except they will not ship milloxane in the winter). You are probably SOL if the mylar is ripped.

Replacing the d tweeter with ribbons would be expensive, would require a new XO, and would probably not sound that great in the end, unless you are confident that you can design a new XO that will seamlessly blend the woofers and tweeters.

The short of it is that this is probably not worth it.

As far as I know Magnepan is still doing Tympanis. I'm sending my IVA mid panels in for some work and already have the RA#. Call them at 1-800-474-1646. Ask for Karen.

Two years ago they had stopped doing tympani 1s. Maybe they have started again.

I recall that there was talk about not doing Tympanis a while back but I thought that they decided to continue. I had a 1D panel repaired not too long ago but it may have been closer to 3 years ago rather than 2 years. Easy enough to find out with a free toll free call. Margaret is at the convention but Karen is still around. If she's busy and can't answer the phone she will call you back if you leave your #.

If the mylar is not riped to bad. It can be repaired.
I had a pair from the factory that look like they had a tear and Magnepan made a patch from mylar of about 5' x 3'.

Tympani frt has become too expensive.
Don't scrap. Remylaring can be done at home.
