Ive run across my first dead hard drive in a Windows 8 machine. The sticker on this HP has no product key for the OS reinstall. What is it embedded in the hardware somehow now? Dont want to order my aunt a new hard drive until I can install the OS. Thanks in advance.

I haven't dealt with OS Product Keys in a few years as Mac OS updates and complete new releases are FREE and hassle-FREE. ;-)

The Product Key may reside with old documentation that came with the HP. Do you have access to any of those old docs?

Yes yet another reason Mac is better. No my aunt doesnt have it and shitty HP scripted support could not answer the simple question does 8 require a product key. Pathetic

Hello, if the installation is a recover disk(s) made by the manufacturer there is no need for a product key. It is usually an image made by the computer company that is specific for the hardware and it won't install on any other hardware.

Thanks for your attempt at humoring me. ;-)

Glad you worked thru it with the BIOS and HP support.

What if you install a Virgin Copy of whatever OS you want?
Will the intall hang because it isn't the 'original' OS that came with the machine?
