Can I use an EXO-173 at the input of a line stage? This would allow me to do phase splitting at the head end of the chain. Does it have/will it need mu-metal shielding to reduce hum in this application?

Also, what is the price and lead time?

I'll wait for an answer from Mike before I draw your differential version...(sounds good)

When I last asked this is the answer I got...
"
in brass channel frames the EXO-173 PPS is $80 each in M6 and $125.00 each in nickel.

This version is optimized for phase splitting duties.

Can it be used as an input phase splitter, either to a PA or line amp? In the past I've had some big problems with hum pickup when using unshielded trannies.

Hi Mike:

you asked;

::::Can it be used as an input phase splitter, either to a PA or line amp? In the past I've had some big problems with hum pickup when using unshielded trannies.::::

Here is my suggestion and recommendations.

the EXO-173PPS was initially designed for use after a voltage amplifier and before the output stage. It can (depending on core material used) accomadate up to 100vrms at 20 hertz... to drive your output stage.

Could it be used at the "iine level" input to your amp..... yes.... escpecially if you get the 173 with nickel lams which will have greater perm at lower operating levels...

will it be noisy? so far... my experience has been that with careful physical placement within your amp's layout... then... you will not have a noise problem...

there are hundreds of B-7 preamp outputs which in most cases use nickel lams and are housed in brass channel frames.... and to date I cannot even think of one instance/complaint of the builder\diy'er complaining of noise being an insurmountable issue.

The b-7 operates at the same if not lower voltage levels than would an EXO-173PPS even if used as a phase splitter before your first voltage\amplification stage within the power amp circuit.

Can I gurantee that you won't have a noise problem... nope... much depends on layout... but... to date... this has not been a real concern.

hope this helps... if not.. fire back....

Mike

First, thanks for the response. I don't seek a guarantee, there's no way to expect such a thing in the real world of EM fields. I was just looking for a first-order feel concerning applications. The rest is up to me, a function of design and layout.

Second, I'm looking to buy American-made iron. Products that are designed and wound in Philadelphia PA are very appealing to me. (Is Pat's Steaks still open?)

Third, where can I go to find a summary of your complete standard product line, and available options? I can't find the PPS on your web site or on Bottlehead. If you have a price sheet you can email me that would also work!

Thanks

Mike T.

whyinthehell that place has the reputation it does is beyond me...find one of the small Mom&Pop Italian places in South Phila and the chee'steak will be of far higher quality, and sonics, THD, IM and what ever other measurement you would care to subject it to.

now, back to the 173 questions...

Doug: I hate to disagree...

Pat's is the King of Steaks.

Pat's is also the originator of the cheesesteak.

Pat's is just plain the best.

When ever an audio distinguished guest arrives in town... it's to Pat's we go. Deep in the heart of the Italian Market district. It's triangle of real estate has been serving up the best cheesesteaks since 1929.

you get a lot of'em right Doug... but here you just plain swung the bat through thin air :=)

a Pat's loyalist,

Mikey

P.S. Where did Rocky go for his cheesesteak? What's Fast Eddie's fave cheesesteak? And what did Bill like better... the cheesesteak or the cigar?

but the best small-volume cheesesteak is at my mom's house in Dunmore. The best place to drink beer from 3 PM until 2 AM, after your very last final, is Zeno's. There are times when I miss Pennsylvania fellas.

BTW: Congratulations Doug. Go Lions.

and to Mr. MSL, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Fortunately, I will not be in the 'distinguished audio guest' category in the near future, and therefore will be spared a sentence of eating at Pat's...

I would be open to going on a chee'steak tasting marathon with you some saturday afternoon/evening, or perhaps a Taco-ing around Kennett and Avondale.

Douglas

I just read Paul Joppa's post about capacitor taste tests...

in philly we do cheesesteak taste tests... and become partisans of each of our respective choices....

and... doug... you are/would be a welcomed guest of honor in Philly... and we could hit all the cheesesteak shops....

and Mike T.... Dunmore.... heh? I have some land above Honesdale (north of on 191) in Equinunk... nice country in the NE corner of Pennsylvania.

cheers everyone,

MSL

Hey Mike,
Of course I caught your intended meaning, and humor. Just like anything one is passionate about( chee'steaks, tube amps, TX Iron, music, Diesel P/U trucks...), it is easy to get carried away. This will be required if you eat a large 'steak from the Haven Deli, they stick out about 10 inches from a refrence standard paper grocery sack.

There's got to be something I can screw with today in my amps. They are ready for Elkton's listening fest now, but the need to tinker is overwhelming...

Maybe I'll get to work on that new amp...

Douglas

What self respecting Italian would touch cheeze wiz!!!LOL

Head on over to Turnersville and try a Blaze Deli steak. ASk for sharp provalone. After shopping at Fazio,s of course. And the next time your down buy the refineries in Delaware swing into one of the mom and pop joints. You'll never eat cheeze wiz again.

I couldn't resist :<)

Later, Scott
