Can Magnequest chokes be repaired?

I have an old (about 10-years old) EXO-99 plate choke (150L/600L). I managed to break off one of the four terminals, including the attached tiny magnet wire. The break is deep enough inside the paper wrap that trying to fish it out will likely make matters worse.

This choke has two coils on one core and frame. The coils can be connected in series (600L) or in parallel (150L). With the terminal gone, one coil is not usable. I could use the working coil (10 mA/150L), but I really like the flexibility afforded by having both coils operative.

Is it even cost effective to repair this, or should I just live with the limitation (or buy a new replacement)?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure how to do that. He doesn't accept unsolicited emails--although I admit, I did try that.

Any hints?

Hello Brian:

Sorry to hear that one unit has sustained damage. Unfortunately it is more expensive to fix or repair this kind of damage than it is to just build a fresh new replacement.

Fixing say this transformer... you'd have to disassemble the core from the coil... then take out the bad winding section manually... then try to clean that bay of any residue varnish... so that we have clean winding surfaces... also need to clean the bobbin (from varnish) where the laminations went in.... then rewind that damaged coil with fresh magnet wire... perhaps the biggest hassle in doing rewinds is getting the lams out of the coil without bending or stressing any of the thin lams which have now been "glued in"... and, again, cleaning each lam of any residual impregnant and throwing out any that have been "tweaked" or "bent" during the disassembly process. Not a pretty job,nor efficient, nor the correct performance solution.

I currently do not have any coil stock or built up EXO-99's in stock. I was actually hoping to retire this part number as it has not been a good seller over the last few years.

I do have an email from you that I am chronically late in replying to. I will try to shoot off a private response with some cost figures to you.

a SMS text message to 215-668-6943.

Text message preferred and easier to respond to.

Thanks

Mike,

Thanks for your kind reply. I sort of knew this would be the unfortunate outcome when the damage happened. Yes, there was some foul language until I calmed down a bit.

I suppose I can keep my eyes open on the resale market in case one pops up from a reliable source. In the meantime, should I assume that I could use the "undamaged half" of the choke (the other bay on the frame) for 150 Henrys at 10 mA? This would at least give me some use of this unit.

I'm also assuming the 20mA rating of a fully-functional choke (for when both bays are operated in parallel) could not be achieved with just one bay operating, because the fine magnet wire would be undersized. Is this correct? Even a few more mA would help me. Several of the tubes I might use with this choke sound best between 15 and 20 mA.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll look forward to your email.
