 Are you willing and/or able to take a bad Peerless16309 and repair it? Any alternatives?

I read somewhere recently that "rewind" or "repair" of bad transformers is not an accurate description in that the only items salvageable or worth using again are the end bells or case (16309). Is this usually true?

If the bad 16309 can be repaired, I'm guessing it will sound somewhat different from the other original output transformer. If that's the case, would the working transformer have to be rebuilt as well?

 Hello.

You've hit several of the issues of "rewinding" or "repairing" faulty/dead transformers. I don't do rewinds or repairs. One of the main reasons is that it is more expensive than just starting with a fresh build.

Other reasons (as you've stated some of) include that there is not much at all salvageable from a teardown. If the unit is a "vintage" unit many of the insulating materials are no longer produced. Of course you could substitute modern insulating materials (which are better in many cases) but then you have the problem (as you've also pointed out) that you no longer have MATCHING stereo transformers.

Lams are almost never resusable... trying to pry them apart after they have been impregnated without bending them... good luck. Bend a lam and it goes in the trashcan.

People do teardowns when they do not have the original blueprints... here we are fortunate to have the Peerless archives. I could build a pair of 16309's from scratch but they would still be expensive due to the setup times and gathering together all the materials and etc. And I would only build them with bell end caps. No way will I tackle the messy job of trying to unpot and reuse the original cans.

 Thank you for clearing that up; very helpful. Your comments on "rewinding", "rebuilding" should be a sticky.

I was excited to see you have something I could use, Brooklyn B18, but you edited it out. I didn't see those on your website price sheet. Why do you no longer offer them?

If you don't have anything, I'll keep looking for NOS Stancor A-8072 transformers; I understand they will work in this application. Any other suggestions?
