 I'm about ready to order a pair of LL1941s and circuit boards from K&K. I'm trying to decide whether to mount them inside the phono-stage I'm building ala the Maxxed-Out unit or construct a stand alone module such as K&K sells.

My inclination is to mount them inside to eliminate an additional set of interconnects and 2 sets of RCA jacks. The downside is that if there are hum issues or interactions with the internal components I am locked in so to speak. I plan on creating two access holes to allow access to the gain switches.

Thoughts?

 Unless you have multiple phono-preamps you want to rotate in and out of your system, go with the internal option. Not only are there less interconnects, but the signal path will be much shorter. Interaction shouldn't be a problem. Will you be building this as a MC pre only or adding additional switches to change from MC to MM? If the latter, be very neat about the wiring, keep it short and us high quality switches. It's a potential path for picking up noise.

 I am not sure about the MC vs MM build as I do have 3 LOMC but 1 HOMC. It would nice to be able to use the HOMC Blackbird occasionally. That would require being able to bypass the SUT if built internally. Thoughts on how to accomplish that?

 I think you just need a double pole, double throw switch (DPDT). I have used gold contact micro toggles for this. I bought them from an aircraft electrical parts supplier. Too long ago to remember whom. One pole for each channel assuming this is stereo. Inputs from RCAs go to middle set of contacts. Out puts on out side go directly to phonostage. The other set of outputs go to the SUTs and from the SUTs to the phonostage. This worked for me once. High quality switch, short as possible wiring, very neat wiring and care solder work. Good luck.
