For me nobody did it better than Weather Report, but that's a while ago. And while we have no end of piano trios and ECM inspired acoustic jazz, I'm missing whatever happened after Weather Report. I mean, did it evolve into anything as good as that?

I must be missing a lot of significant artists and hopefully you guys can fill me in. Coming from the techno side, there's plenty of house style beats with a few jazz chords, and there's a lot of boring generic chill music. Looking for something with more substance...... I guess Jazzanova and Fila Brazilia are in the general ballpark but lack jazz's "Sound of Surprise". Bugge Wesseltoft is maybe more interesting. I'm not looking for jazz funk or acid jazz - something closer to techno. Taylor McFerrin and Thundercat have their moments. I like Brad Mehldau's Largo but that's not very techno. Some of Pat Metheny is nice and that's somewhere in the ballpark.....

Terje Rypdal is good call. that's a fine band too.

Not exactly what I mean. Try this track - needs more of a beat to it, not just synthesised sounds.

Or some of Bugge Wesseltoft

Shabaka Hutchings is a nice discovery for me. Not exactly techno - that's primarily synthesised sounds as were provided by Joe Zawinul in Weather Report in earlier days, but now very evolved using computers and samples triggered live. But certainly good beats. Same for Sons of Kemet. Another nice discovery for me - Oren Marshall on tuba, amazing.

Melt Yourself Down is another good discovery for me - good beats again. Good call.

Nice track - Patriots.

Rochard Bona is outrageous - he can play the bass faster than I can think!

Heard Shabaka in several settings at the Chicago Jazz Festival: in Louis Maholo-Maholo's quartet and in two "free jazz" jams. I liked his playing, but he didn't really have much of a "sound" on his horn, and he was generally the weakest link in all of these groupings. Probably plays with more confidence in his own projects, and he looks very young so I'm sure he has much room for growth.

Alan Murphy is a more techno version of Lee Ritenaur - rather nice.

Christophe Goze is techno chill music - atmospheric stuff. Nice but a bit bland

Yussef Kamaal - Black Focus album is jazz over heavy afro beats with some free expression thrown in, London based. Some nice sounds.

Useful additions!
