Enjoy Ryan Truesdell, Maria Schneider, Akioshi, Thad and Mel. What other modern big band jazz is bending your ear?

Gene Harris with the Philip Morris big band swings like mad. You might also enjoy some of the Terry Gibbs live big band recordings - Mel Lewis is on drums. I think they are both on iTunes.

Here's a (very) partial list:

Rick Wald (Yes, our very own)
Darcy James Argue
Christine Jensen
John LaBarbera
Ed Palermo
Gordon Goodwin
John Fedchok
Cecilia Coleman
Christian McBride
Mingus Big Band
Vanguard Orchestra
Afro Bop Alliance Big Band
Bob Mintzer
Roy Hargrove
Danish Radio Big Band

There are many more I can't recall at the moment. One thing to remember, sad to say, is that virtually none of these are traveling bands in any traditional sense.

Try Lee Harper and also Jason Lindner. I really liked the Jason Lindner Big Band record....modern.

Maybe not as many players as a traditional big band, but....., posted on September 4, 2017 at 11:27:25
I find some of Guillermo Klein's music/groups very interesting and unique - including the recording linked.

You can also check out some clips of John Hollenbeck's Large Ensemble at this link:

that was part of anecdote he would tell during his live performances at a club in sherman oaks california on ventura blvd. i feel extremely fortunate to have had the pleasure of attending at least three perfomances in that upstairs back room.

he was the master of precision and a real tyrant on the bandstand. also, his "Reed Choir", who were LONG term members of his group would be featured, what a beautiful pleasure.

Until you brought his name up, I wasn't aware that Klein had done some recordings with large groups, even though I have several of his releases. I've just ordered a couple of the larger group sessions.

They are kind of an orchestra for hire, but they do a lot of jazz scores, e.g. Vince Mendoza

and, YES, Michele LeGrand "LeGrand Jazz". An early introduction for me to Modern "Large Ensemble" Jazz (I was 16 and in High School - 1958) Still stands up nicely for be altho there are some naysayers in here. Loaded with Jazz luminaries: Miles, Trane, Ben Webster & on and on.

Have them all but would never characterize them as "modern"., posted on September 15, 2017 at 20:47:58
At least not in the sense that Akioshi or even Gil Evans would be. We all have different ideas of modernity, no doubt.
