Bill was obviously an introvert and a rather private person, but he did some interviews. He's not chatty and doesn't give too much away. There's one interview in Norway with the trio inc. Eddie Gomez which is quite good.

I think it's more interesting to actually listen to jazz musicians talking than read analyses by others, really. But a lot of jazz musicians weren't particularly chatty in front of a microphone. They probably were when not being pestered by journalists.

I presume all the material in the retrospective has already appeared on disc - didn't study it too carefully. The trio I listen to is the one with Eddie Gomez and Elliot Zigmund.

If you want to hear samples of the live set at oil Can Harry's in Vancouver in 1975 there are tracks on YouTube. Very nice too.

I am a confessed Bill Evans fan. That said, the most impressive album to me is one that is not discussed, "Practice Tape". It was an independent release around 20 years ago on digital only (CD).

It is composed of 60 minutes of discovered 'lower quality' reel-to-reel recordings of practice sessions......if you like Bill's music; you will love hearing how he 'thinks harmonically' as well as his take of parts of Bach Well Tempered Clavier with a jazzy tinge (albeit, a different jazzy voice than Keith Jarrett's excellent set).

Bill Evans was interviewed by Marian McPartland for her radio show Piano Jazz in 1977. It's a fascinating interview that also includes both of them playing.

That was a good one, during which Bill joked that he was "the fastest boogie woogie player in New Jersey."
