Just heard that Badal Roy died this week. I got to hear him a few times: with Ornette Coleman's Prime Time in the late 80's, with a Indian/Jazz fusion band he played with occasionally here in New Orleans, and just a few years ago at the Prime Time reunion concert at Lincoln Center. From a chance encounter with John McLaughlin in the Indian restaurant where he worked as a busboy and occasional tabla player to the world's stages with two of the most adventurous musicians in jazz--his is quite a story of a man who forged his own way in this world: |
