RIP Barry Harris.

Oh, man. I have some special memories of Barry Harris., posted on December 10, 2021 at 09:08:50
Years ago Barry had a funky joint on 8th Ave. where bands rehearsed and lessons were taught. Jaki Byard's big band rehearsed there and I played lead alto in it a number of times. Tommy Turrentine was a fixture there too.

Rather than make this too long I'll just say that one hell of a jazz education could be had at that joint, both history and theory. Anecdote after anecdote, inside story after inside story and masters playing.

Barry was always there when Jaki's band rehearsed. I witnessed several raps between Jaki and Barry about scales and forms during those big band rehearsals, and they'd take turns demonstrating on the piano. I'd sit in my chair a few feet away from the piano they were playing with my mouth open trying to soak it in. A couple of jazz wizards freely sharing their knowledge so that younger generations could continue and expand the music.

I salute Barry Harris not just as a great player and person but as a teacher and historian. If there was ever a guy who lived the "jazz life" Barry Harris was that guy. R.I.P.

I saw his trio at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the mid-60s. Memorable for the music and the fact that it was probably my first jazz concert.

RIP
