I've been looking for the singer that can squeeze the most feeling out of this lovely song. I usually listen to Keith Jarrett playing the tune, but for the vocal version how about these:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4Si1muq-EM George Michael - this is lovely

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXBpVctOEVw Sarah Vaughan - nice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7xF38qJl3c Joni Mitchell - lush sounds and the words come through with the right kind of emotion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDKbigV4OHE Jeanie Bryson - this is good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST9NfckQOyI Eva Cassidy - beautiful singing but the words don't quite land.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyRyCgq5KYI Ella - beautiful singing but again the words aren't quite there

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogUhV-dxtK4 Nat King Cole - lovely voice, but the lyrics are a bit flat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGwX7f2wcq0 Billie Holiday - the recording is rather rough, or maybe she wasn't in the best voice, and the arrangement is pretty trite

Also ran - Diana Ross, Nikki Yanofsky, Isabella Lundgren, Renee Olstead, Frankie Laine, Nancy Wilson, Malou Beauvoir, Leila Maria, Etta James, Marvin Gaye, The Platters, Liane Carroll.. all on YT

In this round-up I'm giving it to George Michael, and the others in descending order. Great song.

I have been picking jazz standards from the book and searching all versions for new favorites. There is a lot out there.

This arrangement is too busy, but Mr. Scott doesn't mess around with the lyrics.

Too bad he didn't redo it latter At Last like with a better arrangement and that emotional
base that just got better and better. His Patina became unparalleled.

Great singing...

The only comping instrument who is listening is the guitarist. They should have sent the pianist and vibes player out for a pizza.

Yes - it's interesting to choose one standard and run through a dozen or so versions.

What's interesting is that if your main interest is the lyrics and how real and genuine they come across, then you often get that from popular singers, not jazz ones. You get some great singing from the likes of Ella and Sarah Vaughan, but neither really plumbed the depths of the lyrics, Ella especially often sounding quite disengaged.

I'm surprised these days at how little I listen to Billie Holiday, and especially late recordings. There are many other singers I'd prefer to hear.

I had no knowledge of Jeanie Bryson until now. Interesting background - dad was Dizzy but he hushed it up since he was married.

An attractive voice, quite light but can make the lyrics tell. Interesting to listen to but has clearly been outside the mainstream through her career.

I liked this comment under one of her YT songs:
"You know, as someone who adores Shirley Horn almost to inappropriate levels, your comment evoked intense skepticism from me... now that I hear Ms. Bryson's rendition, I do see why you say that... I agree. Good music."

I run through the vocal and instrumental versions. I really enjoy hearing a pop singer with talent whose "regular" music I do not appreciate kill standards.

She's very nice. I met her a couple of times and sat with her for a set of music at Smalls years ago. I asked her to sing I've Got A Crush On You at an set she did in NJ.
