Jamal and Rollins are now 90 and Jarrett isn't doing live gigs or even recording any more, as far as I know.

Who else has now "retired" through ill health, age or other reasons?

Any news on Archie Shepp and other musicians and "jazz legends" now in their 80s?

Wayne Shorter? There was a tribute to him last year and not sure he was able to play. The dates with Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard and Josh Redman and Ambrose Akinmusire with his rhythm section were FANTASTIC!!

Dick is almost 94 years young, and is apparently still performing per
his website.

It is hard to say who is retired these days since almost no one is working and octogenarians are the least likely to be playing out during the pandemic. I saw Archie Shepp with Dave Burrell at the Vision Festival in 2018 and Andrew Cyrille, Kidd Jordan and Milford Graves (last time he performed I believe) there in 2019. I know Kidd hopes to be able to perform again (he's 85) but the world has its own schedule. I am not sure but I don't think Cyrille, Burrell, or Shepp consider themselves retired, but for a musician retiring is different than not touring. For these guys playing their axe is their life.

I saw Cyrille a bit over a year ago with Trio 3, which included two other youngsters: Reggie Workman and Oliver Lake. Schepp and Pharoah Sanders each played DC within the past 2 years. Ron Carter is still recording. I saw Benny Golson in Vienna AU on his 90th birthday tour in May of '19. He and Rollins are the only surviving subjects from Art Kane's Great Day in Harlem photograph. George Cables recovered from serious health problems and was playing before the big shutdown.

OTOH, I hear Roy Haynes isn't doing well, and not playing. And of course we lost Chick Corea and Milford Graves last week, two of too many the past year. Very few seem to retire before exiting stage left.

He is still very active. Has been streaming during the pandemic. Just love him.

Yes, very much so. And, an under appreciated talent at the keys. His solo at Maybeck effort on Concord is one of my favorites of the 40-plus albums in that series. Over the Rainbow is over the top beautiful.

One of my faves, Frank Strozier, was pretty young when he kinda disappeared from the scene., posted on February 21, 2021 at 09:40:12
I've never been able to ask Strozier if this is true, but.....

Years ago I was part of a group of NYC saxophone players that brought a great saxophone repair guy, Emilio Lyons, down from Boston to Manhattan for a day and do minor adjustments to our horns. George Coleman was there - Strozier used to play in an octet George had for a while. I asked Coleman what Frank Strozier was doing. He told me Frank stopped playing. I was kinda shocked and asked why. Coleman told me Frank was so pissed off at the prices and rotten quality of reeds that he said "fuck this" and quit playing. Though that's pretty extreme, as a saxophone player I do understand.

They had bins with VeeJay and other jazz records.
I also have Cloudy and Cool,
and one Shelly Manne LP, Boss Sounds.
Did he play with Miles?

Don't know of Strozier playing w/Miles. I have these LP's with Strozier - he sounds great on all:

Louis Hayes Group
Variety Is The Spice (Gryphon)

Shelley Manne
Perk Up (Concord)

Horace Parlan
Frankly Speaking (Steeple Chase)

Frank Strozier/Booker Little
Waltz Of The Demons (Atlantis)

I also have 2 albums under a drummer's name (can't remember name and don't wanna look right now) that's a quintet w/Strozier and George Coleman that are excellent.

He played with Don Ellis, so you know he could count! , posted on February 22, 2021 at 09:23:30

Apparently Archie Shepp just performed with David Murray, Hamid Drake, etc. in France. I spoke with Hamid in December, and he mentioned he had gigs in Europe with Murray coming up. I don't he mentioned Archie, but they play together quite often so this all makes sense.

Drummer's name is Keno Duke. 2 very nice quintet recordings w/Strozier & George Coleman. nt, posted on February 25, 2021 at 13:03:52

Interesting story about the end of Strozier's career. I know reed quality is a universal complain but....wow.
