I've been fascinated by a long and engrossing recent interview with Donald Fagen. He talks a lot about jazz (he phones Sonny Rollins from time to time for a chat) and confesses to putting Charlie Parker tracks on to help him sleep.

There's too much good stuff to mention, some of it very funny, but when it comes to singers he's not a fan of the usual "jazz singers" like Ella and Sarah Vaughan. I'm with him there, incidentally. His favourite, along with Ray Charles, and the singer he most wanted to sound like, was......

Billy Eckstein.

On the subject of Billy Eckstein, there's a whole story around a photo published in Life of him with some white fans, one of whom is laughing on his shoulder. It seriously affected his career.
