CORRECTION: His name is Victor Gould, not Victor Young!!! I picked this disc up some time ago after reading Erik's ringing endorsement of this fine young pianist and this record. It's taken me a while to report back as promised (sorry Erik). The music heard on this album is not that of a radical or a trailblazer, but of a musician who has well-synthesized the trends in modern jazz over the last few decades without getting too "far out" at any time. Gould tends to make surprise with rhythm more so than pitch or harmony. The use of a string section lends a sonic dimension that gives the project an out-of-the-way sound as well. Flute also plays a prominent role in many of the arrangements. Listening to this disc, it is apparent that Gould has studied the albums of his recent forbears on piano. The album by turns reminds me of music I've heard on albums by Mulgrew Miller, James Williams and--especially--Geri Allen. The infectious "What We Need" is particularly Allen-esque. In this release, Victor Gould is shown to be a solid, sure-handed pianist, composer, and arranger in the contemporary jazz vein. Excellent recorded sound, especially the piano. |
