Every time I hear a performance by drummer Clarence Penn these days, I can't help but feel that he is a major stylistic source for current greats like Justin Brown, Marcus Gilmore, and even Brian Blade. Yet his name rarely seems to come up among listeners. It seems odd to me that Penn's striking originality has been taken up by so many in his wake yet he still remains relatively obscure in the big picture of jazz drumming over the last few decades. Has anyone else noticed this?

He is excellent! Every time I hear him I wonder why I don't hear more of him. He is still playing great. That Dave Douglass record is a masterpiece.

I just happened to put this on for the first time in awhile! Clarence Penn on drums. I had forgotten that he was on this date.
