Jazz lost two great people and two great players., posted on January 20, 2020 at 09:03:10
Seeing Jimmy Heath play and having my friend Keith Copeland introduce me to Jimmy made me wonder how that big sound came from such a small guy. Very humble and friendly man, very knowledgeable musician. Wow, what a career!

I met Claudio in Boston my last year at Berklee in 1970. There were several Brazilians at Berklee in those days, all very good players. Claudio was a standout. He was also a standout as a person. Loose, warm, funny guy. He played a number of times in my first NYC big band and always sounded great.

R.I.P.

Always great when people share their experience(s) with other musicians. I saw Claudio perform in Chicago in 1996. He was very kind and autographed the newspaper clipping I brought with me.

I was playing a tune from Jimmy Heath's Little Man, Big Band album on my WPFW show yesterday morning as part of a set celebrating the music and legacy of Mr. Heath. This was the big band album that earned him a Grammy nomination. Reading the liner notes in preparation for back announcing the set, I noticed that Cauldio Roditi was a member of the trumpet section. They died two days apart 20 years apart in age. Kind of spooky.
