I'm curious if many folks here in this group have heard the Newville Records series. My wife got me season ll for Christmas, and I have really enjoyed two of the the first three. The John Patitucci take on Brazilian jazz is one of my favorite new jazz albums of the last few years. The conversation is complex and yet I still feel welcome. And the recording is very good - the bass is powerful and rich (maybe slightly too rich, but maybe that's my system), and the feeling that it is a conversation occurring in the same room in which I am sitting is uncanny.

I am trying hard to get the Kevin Hays-Lionel Loueke album. I can't relax into the duet, and the singing (or vocalizing) is a unwelcome third voice. I believe it is my job to come to the art, rather than the art come to me, so I'm staying with it, and hopefully it will find a way into my heart.

And just a few days ago, the latest one, the Jon Cowherd/Brian Blade quartet arrived, and I can't get enough of it. Wonderful playing, clever arrangements, another quality recording.

I haven't heard any of the albums from the first season. Does anyone have recommendations from that series? Is anyone else enjoying Newville?

David

While I like the concept (and frankly haven't heard any of their releases), I just haven't been able to justify the cost. For these, or for any other recordings for that matter.
