A quick internet search led me to a religious website called The Trumpet, which talks of two anointed ones; and then to another religious website declaring that "Trump will become the trumpet".

So I can't prove it, but this seems like a poor inside joke at Trump's expense.

It is some excellent Freddie Hubbard, but Dexter is clearly the star here. YMMV

Nothing to do with that. His initials are WM.

I don't know who the trumpeter is on this track, but for WM I read Marsalis. So is this saying that ?? Freddy Hubbard played without the ultimate depths of emotional connection? Or the other way around? Or.....?

Anyway, an interesting point of view but what difference does a few moody ballads make to a career in jazz? Miles could play moody ballads but that alone doesn't make him a trumpeter you want to hear again and again and again. Same with Chet Baker, a master of the moody ballad. How many moody ballads do you get in a jazz set anyway - probably one at most? I don't remember Dizzy for his moody ballads - he probably played a few pretty well but that wasn't what his reputation was based on.

If I want to get my real kicks out of an outstanding trumpeter in full flight, creating great runs and soaring above the music then there's several I can think of, from Freddy Hubbard onwards or backwards in time. Whether they poured their hearts out once in a while in a moody ballad isn't really something that would bother me.

This place would kinda suck if it was a constant rock-throwing fest. Criticism is one thing, even harsh criticism. This is starting to seem more like gratuitous bashing.

It's Freddie. I would say he poured his heart out on some of his fast stuff also. As to what difference (a few) moody ballads make, I would say all the difference in the world. T456

In this case, yes. I've been well behaved here since about August 2017. You really can't ask for more than that. T456

You're certainly right - it's a great solo. Freddie was so inventive.

I guess ballads do matter - just thinking of John Coltrane's "Ballads", one of my favourite CDs. We think of him as a guy who played fast, which he did, but his ballads were beautiful. Archie Shepp was another great ballad player.
