Interesting guitarist who made some nice albums with Charles Lloyd and Chico Hamilton. "Of Course, of Course" was a great album with Charles Lloyd, Tony Williams and Ron Carter.

Somewhat less known was "Passin' Thru" with Chico Hamilton

Unfortunately he lost the plot, like many of his contemporaries, and died age 45. Quite an original voice.

Just recently I have been revisiting different albums/musicians/types of music that I haven't listened to in decades and Gabor popped up along side a few psychedelic crossover albums.
That lead me on to a few of his other recordings which are now on a list to hunt down.

... is a gem. If you thought nothing could ever redeem "Sunshine Superman" and "Love Is Blue," try this thing. If you can find it.

EDIT: That "pn" in the subject line is supposed to be "on."

Just love his arrangements - he did some lovely ones for Stan Getz. And a nice album with Bill Evans as well. There were all kinds of things happening in the 60s just a bit out of the limelight. Bill Russo comes to mind as well.

No Szabo, but 3 more excellent McFarland's recordings., posted on May 20, 2018 at 09:30:28
Link is my fave McFarland recording. Great players (too many to list) and beautiful writing. Also have:

Profiles (Impulse) -- another large ensemble with an amazing lineup of players

October Suite (Impulse) - featuring pianist Steve Kuhn (Impulse) with strings, woodwinds and rhythm section

I have "America the Beautiful" on reel-to-reel tape. I agree with you.

I'll keep an eye out for the other two.

My favorite McFarland recordings include Tijuana Jazz (Impulse) with Clark Terry and The Gary McFarland Orchestra (Verve) with Bill Evans.

Forgot the one w/Evans - have the LP. I'll look for the one with Clark. nt, posted on May 20, 2018 at 15:17:32
