A real giant of the music--I feel privileged to have heard him in person once.

One of the real originals in Jazz, like Monk and Ornette Coleman. Truly inspirational.

Was the bassist on Cecil Taylor's seminal albums in the late 50's early 60's and " New York City R&B " was initially released under Buell's name. Buell's death was on 3/16/2018 , too few of the greats are still with us.

Maybe you have to be musically well-trained in order to appreciate CT.
I don't fit that category, so I do not appreciate his playing. Matter
of fact, I have no idea what he's doing, or trying to do, so I am not
going to miss him even a little.

Me either. As soon as I hear the words "modern" or "avantgarde" in the same sentence as "jazz" I run the other way.

He's never been a favorite of mine. I've only partly cracked the code but I go back and try again every so often. I have a feeling I haven't heard his best work. Conquistador! Is the only album I have of his.

I tried to get into Taylor. He certainly was an innovator and developed a unique style. I ended up having lottsa respect for his abilities and artistic integrity, but just didn't find his music that appealing.

For those who get Cecil Taylor and those that don't, I will be dedicating a large portion of my radio show Thursday morning to his work. WPFW 89.3FM Washington, DC or stream live at www.wpfwfm.org. Thursday 5-8:00 am. Cecil Taylor portion probably from 5:40 until 7:15 +/-.
Craig Williams sitting in for Jim Dombrouski on Morning Brew Classic Jazz Edition.

I hope you can tune in and hear something you like.

I listened to some of unit structures today and came away feeling about the same s usual. The tonal language is distinctive and not TOO difficult to grasp but rhythmically the music seems to have very little real organization. I think this is where the appeal falls flat for me. Maybe time will change that eventually.

Audio shows are archived for two weeks and can be found on the website. The show is Morning Brew and Union City Radio Classic Jazz Edition.

what is the name of your show? The D.C. / Baltimore area is red hot for Jazz.

That album bears little resemblance to the overwhelming majority of his recordings/music., posted on April 10, 2018 at 15:26:49
Its mildly interesting to hear early Taylor, but if I'm going to listen to his music I'd much rather hear what he's best known for - his much later playing/music. Best thing on Jazz Advance is Lacy, and there's sure lottsa other Lacy recordings that I'd rather listen to.

Don't have any Taylor recs since I'm not a fan of his music. Here's the Lacy LP's I own/like.

Steve Lacy Soprano Sax (Prestige)
Reflections (New Jazz)
Evidence w/Don Cherry (Prestige)
The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy (Candid)
Change Of Season - music of Herbie Nichols (Soulnote)

My closest Jazz stream is wwoz - New Orleans.
The DJ just played 'The World of Cecil Taylor' 1960 album.

I have been subbing for folks for about 16 months. Since early January I have been doing Jim Dombrouski's Thursday morning Classic Jazz edition of Morning Brew as he has been facing ongoing medical challenging issues. When he is able to return, I am suppose to have my own regular show Wednesday night/Thursday morning midnight to 2:00 am, but I think Thursdays 5:00 to *{00 am will continue for another month or two.

Listen in live stream if you can or on archives if that works better for you. www.wpfwfm.prg. Feedback always welcome/

You can listen online to archived music shows for two weeks. Do so if you can. Programming long songs is challenging with news breaks, station IDs, etc. but I managed to work some in including ending with a 40 minute Taylor-Roach duet.

I had more technical difficulties and operator error than normal, but I got many, many positive calls from listeners so I will consider it a success.

Wow, this is the longest tread since "Are jazz musicians nice people" Seems appropriated that CT would evoke responses from both end of the spectrum.

Here is the Cecil Taylor part of the playlist. Closing out with a 40 minute duet kind of breaks the mold for morning drive time radio, but Cecil certainly broke a lot of molds in his lifetime. Enjoy.
