The question of getting started immediately made me think of Ted O'Reilly and his stint at CJRT in Toronto for 37 years from 1965 to 2002, and then Bob Parlocha who did the overnight show on Jazz.FM91 (the "all jazz" successor to CJRT in 2001) from his home studio in California until his death from a heart attack in 2015. For fifty years I took it for granted that I would be in touch with the best of jazz, both the trending and the past. Well, no more.

Jazz.FM91 is a lame homogenized mess. Is there anything on internet radio which isn't generic, but eclectic and unpredictable, that can come close to Bob Parlocha's show?

I don't know the show you're referring to but, SiriusXM's jazz channel does have some interesting shows. Yes, they can get mired in the past by playing the same versions of the same tunes every day but Joey DeFrancesco's show, Organized, is good, and he has authentic stories, Marcus Miller's is good, also Christian McBride's and there is an older DJ who can be hip, too, can't remember his name, afternoon maybe. And, yes, the sound is marginal, but if you can get past that, and I can, you will be rewarded.

Thanks: I'll get a new trial subscription with my new Audi S5 Sportback in October, and I'll give SiriusXM another try.

I live in Saint Paul, MN, and we have a 24 hour jazz public radio station Jazz88 (It's 88.5) that can be listened to online. Their fairly conservative in their selections, but no completely so. Kansas Public Radio (Yes, KANSAS) also has nightly and overnight jazz programs that can be accessed online. Fairly conservative too, but they do stray sometimes from the tried and true.

jkust about any jazz station in the world is available online.

kcsm, kkjz, and wbgo are all decent. wbgo may be more to your liking. some research will yield more choices than you can imagine.

Well, if you're just going to listen to it in the car...........

That's not really listening, is it, cause after about 20-30MPH, your ears and the road are competing? Or, maybe that Audi is that quiet. Ehh?

I listened to wbgo for an hour and a half last night on my MagniFi Mini soundbar in the bedroom, and it proved worthy of further listening.

I like WKCR better., posted on August 9, 2017 at 13:41:11
They do play plenty of excellent jazz, but way too much of BGO's programming is standard middle of the road stuff, and not nearly enough of the new and (for me) more interesting jazz. They very rarely play long jazz tracks, which eliminates a lotta great jazz. Years ago BGO had to start including blues shows and the dreaded (by me, anyway) "soft" jazz in order to attract contributors. 'Course I like blues, but not hours of it on the radio.

KCR (Columbia University station) often plays whole albums of more adventurous jazz. Anyway, you can check it out for yourself if you haven't already. Its not all jazz, and I seriously doubt you'd like everything they play. But as I said, BGO isn't all jazz either. Check KCR's schedule.

Unfortunately this is all too true of virtually every jazz station I know of. It's usually like a visit to a museum.

A couple of duffuses talking sports right now. I've put WBGO, KUVO, WKCR and an -HD2 channel - Jazz24 - into tunein. I'll need to do some listening.

Yes!
They did 24 hours of Coltrane, W/Interviews, and 24 hours of Cecil Taylor when I was there w/SF Sym,
on Hotel Radio.
Where else are you going to find that?
I have them in my Favorites online.
Also Modern Classical you won't hear anywhere else!

So far Jazz24 - KNKX Tacoma - is my favourite because the sound quality of the HD through TuneIn is "near CD".

Keep me posted Jim.

I live in Boston, and we still have a remnant of the great WGBH Jazz programming with Friday though Sunday's "Eric in the Evening." Eric Jackson has been doing this show for decades, and while he used to have five nights per week, and fun studio visitors, and trips to local jazz spots, that seems to have contracted along with the days he broadcasts.

I have a pretty good audio system, with at least good source components, but by far the most realistic moment in my audiophile history was listening to WGBH's live broadcasts of the BSO from Symphony Hall. Didn't know FM could be my most vital source. That, sadly, is gone too.
