I've been trying to find any Russian jazz I like and finally came across this guy. Definitely some Scriabin in there which is good with me. There are more tracks on YT including Rhapsody in Blue - an interesting piano player with serious chops. He's actually only Russian by birth - moved to USA at 10 but probably was exposed to a fair bit of Russian classical music before the age of 10.

Another good track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzAPljnv4RI

I had some fun in 1964 when I sat in for 2 nights in one of the Moscow jazz clubs - Kafe Molodyozhnaya, Ulitsa Gorkovo. Great techniques, but very odd styles of playing - one pianist seemed to only have got hold of Dave Brubeck tracks, and so on. Of course, they were great guys and very welcoming. They used to listen to jazz on Voice of America on the radio, record it on tape and pass it round.

Any more tips on Russian jazz, preferably something more ethnically and distinctively Russian?

This is a nice track - interesting arrangement. Russia is such a musical nation that there just must be good things happening there.

Maybe so, but obviously there's nothing particularly Russian in any of these links., posted on December 3, 2017 at 11:27:09
I've yet to hear anything identifiably Russian from any jazz musicians born there. The best Russian jazz musicians I'm aware of sound as American as I do, including the players in these links. Dunno what jazz you think would sound Russian other than playing a folk tune or a version of some Russian "classical" theme.

I agree. Could be from Cleveland and sound like that. Is Igor Butman also Russian? Yacov Okun has a nice record on Crisscross also. I believe he is Russian.

It's a shame that Russians can't put more of their tradition into jazz, posted on December 4, 2017 at 03:55:11

Russia has a huge and rich musical tradition, but very little of it seems to have got into jazz. Not a huge amount more into contemporary rock and pop either. During the Soviet era the Russians were naively hungry for anything Western - jeans, biros and so on. They didn't seem to place enough value on their culture to let it stand up to and fuse with Western music. Shame.

I'm a big fan of Russian composers, but their heritage doesn't seem to extend into jazz. nt, posted on December 4, 2017 at 08:49:31

Igor Butman is Bill Clinton's favorite sax player. Now if you could find who Trump's favorite is, you might have something that is more authentically Russian.

Not something I'd buy, but yes, it sounds more Russian. nt, posted on December 10, 2017 at 08:48:36
