Altec Magnificent A7500W cabinet plans...

Would anyone have the cabinet plans for the Altec Magnificents?

I've watched several pair sell on eBay for "magnificent" prices, and, as I already have several sets of drivers to work with, I'd like to try to "roll my own" using a nice veneer. I'm not wild about the high-camp retro die-cut wood grilles either...

So far, I've amassed the following:

846A Valencias with 16 ohm 416Z/811B/806A

846B Valencias with 8 ohm 416-8B/811B/806-8B

511B/902-8B HF driver pair

Should I be looking for 515's or non-Z 416's?

I'd like to get this Altec thing right!

I'm enjoying the 846A's alot with a 10 watt Fisher SA-16 EL84 amp, but want to bi-amp with bigger boxes, to get the HF drivers a little higher off the floor, and for a little extra LF boost, maybe using a pair of Leak TL-25+ EL34 amps below, passing through a pair of Heath XO-1 tube crossovers. I haven't gotten the SET religion yet, though I follow the forum with interest.

Any suggestions are appreciated, especially from those who may have already completed a project of this "dimension". From what I can see, these are 825/828 cabinets with extra height to completely include/enclose? the HF horn.

MDF or plywood...other ideas? For that matter, I'm not adverse to "veneering" regular 825/828's and mounting the horns on top, though, if one has gone that far, shouldn't the bigger boxes be considered? I've been following the veneer threads elsewhere with interest.

Thanks to any respondents...

John Oren

John---The A7 was often used in the inverted mode; the cabinet upsidedown with the high fequency horn mounted in the port with the port in it's enlarged configuration, the bottom (now the top) removable port panel removed. The Magnificent was a furniture version of such an inverted A7.

Yes, and IMO don't sound all that coherent due to the LF being too close to the floor in the Magnificents.

515's were designed specifically for the 210/211 cabs, so it has less LF BW capability without significantly reducing it's efficiency. The 416B would be a better choice for extended LF response IMO. That said, I much prefer the 515B, and use a sub to fill in below 80Hz. A modded 511/500Hz XO is required due to the 515's limited BW (~1kHz).

A well braced marine grade or Baltic Birch plywood cab is preferred since it will resonate above the LF's BW. Of course the HF horn needs to be damped also.

WRT cab size, it's driver dependent so use whatever is needed to meet your goals/SAF approved.
