Fullrange Drivers for the masses!!!

Gang,

Here are some good places to start as far as making some cool speakers!

http://store.yahoo.com/fostex/speakcom.html

The Fostex Sigma line to me rivals even the best Lowthers. I have made systems now based on the FE108, FE168 and FE208 in various cabinets including backhorns (108 & 168 ) and ported (168 and 208). If you are looking for a real nice fullrange unit from 100HZ up the 108 is magical. There are also some drivers in the standard FE series tat are wonderful.

Do you remember in grade school when they took one of those huge lantern batteries and connected a wire wrapped around a nail and that made a magnet.

In the beginning of speakers they used what is called Field Coil technology. This as above required a DC source to make the magnet structure. The FLB20D40EX looks really cool in this regard, saving my cash for a pair.

My all time fav in the fullrange driver search. The Diatone P610MB was used in a product I producded the JPO Memorial Speaker. The driver in that system was ruller flat from 35Hz (-3dB) to 18KHz. What a winner!!!

My take on this driver is as follows: The gain bandwidth principle states that the more gain you have the less bandwith. In the Lowther sense they pushed the gain so high it has lost the top and bottom end. When they designed the Diatone P610MB they pushed down the gain (it is still Alnico magnet structure) to get better bandwith, a win win for this unit!

A newer driver to the fullrange market this Pioneer is suppose to be close to the Diatone in style but lacking a little in the top end.

The high end of Japanese fullrange units the Roiene drivers are suppose to be very nice, though a little costly.

Have Fun, sorry I can't give away any of my designs but there is a lot of information out there and some of these are easy to use!

Oh yea here is a great minimonitor solution:

FE108 Sigma $72 each
BK10 Backhorn cabinets $105 each

Postage may run a little high but I have these and they are great!

Gordon,
I have tried the 208 Sigma in the same system and cabinet as Lowther PM 2A and PM7A. To my ears the Fostex 208 Sigma is nice, but lacks the sparkle and life of any A series driver I have heard. To mount the 208 the cutout was left alone, and the mounting holes redrilled.
I would recommend someone looking for a full range on the cheap to purchase a 15 ohm PM 6A. They cost more than the Fostex, but I have not found a driver that is nearly as good for less.
After using the Fostex for 3 months, I purchased a pair of PM6A. The difference betwen the PM2A, PM7A, and PM6A is very clear. I prefer the PM7A the most and the PM2A the least. This is completely opposite from most opinions. The PM2A is normally ranked as the best driver for single driver, direct sound applications. It sounds peaky and hasd to me. The PM6A lacks a little top end. The PM7A is warm and golden, with the best dynamics. With anything that is handmade, another set of drivers might sound completely different.

Dear Mr. Gordon Rankin!

If You mention the coax Roine design You should also not forget the Fostex F200 Alnico Full Range Speaker.

This F200A is much better than the Roine or the Lowther or the standard Fostex FE 163.

I know them all quite well. During the project building the F200A I even ordered a pair of FT33RP ribbon tweeter and a pair of Alnico Horn Tweeters, because the above mentioned do not have the frequency extension I wish. But after finishing the project I did not need any tweeter because the F200 A is so good in the heights that You do not miss something. Have a look on my web:

Hi Gordon,
All things being equal, which project is better ... Diatones in bass reflex or Fostex 108S in backhorn? Bert Doppenberg has the Fostex 103 in a tqwp ... How does the Triangle full range fit into your recommendation? And are you familiar with the Babb P6, 939 and 1038 drivers?
Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobcat

Bob,

Diatone best fullrange, the 108 and 103 suffer in the bass extensively. BUT Have better top end.

==> And are you familiar with the Babb P6, 939 and 1038 drivers?

Nop... but always interested in new fullrange.

First, who ever said that just sticking any old driver into a backhorn would work.

Why do you think some of the LOWTHERS work better in some cabs and not in others.

Listen the Fostex have very different specs than the Lowthers and should not be used in the same designs. I designed several backhorns specifically for Fostex drivers and had very good luck with them. Better than Lowther???

The point is that each of the drivers above have different characteristics, just placing any one in some backhorn doesn't mean it optimized for it.

Hi Gordon
To read more on the Babb, have a look at the Full Range Driver Forum for more information from guys that use them, or visit the Babb Speakers website. They are great drivers IMHO.
Enjoy.

Gordon,

These are beautiful! Specifically what are we looking at?

Gang,

Fostex FE168 Sigma back horn loaded in a 2.1M 45HZ Tractix horn, with a Fostex FT96H tweeter pulled in about 11KHz.

About 38Hz-32KHz -3dB

Hey Gordon,

you forgot to mention the first source for full range driver info: the Single Driver Website (below)!

Nocturne's Voigt Pipes/Fostex FE-208 = $463.45 a pair!, posted on May 3, 2000 at 23:21:22

Gordon is right! Fostex is the way to go if you want to keep costs down in regards to speakers. But what about the box? What do you do? Well, a rather nice solution is to build a pair of Voigt Pipes. The Voigts are easy to build! Plus you are getting the closest thing to a horn speaker!

Just take a look at Nocturne's Voigt Pipes linked below. He tells you all you need to know about these speakers, including the costs involved. To keep costs down, he used the Fostex FE-205 Sigmas instead of the more expensive Lowthers. Still, I find it amazing that he built the pair for only $463.45!

Congratulations Nocturne!

For more info on the Voigt Pipe plans, check the Lowther Club of Norway at...

I built the voigt pipes and used a pair of radio-shack full range
units (8 inch) to good effect. I actually think they sound great.
I thought of lowthers, and did intend the cab's I built to be used
with those, but I have never actually heard them. I think
the lowthers are simply too expensive for my budget, so reading such praise for the fostex drivers really makes them an inviting possibility.
