Inductor Size

Does inductor size as it relates to the awg make a difference in sound?

I have a pair of 18 awg .75mh inductors and the crossover I am building calls for a .75mh 14 awg inductor. Could I use the 18 awg as a substitute?

Thanks.

Everything else being equal, 18 awg inductor will probably have a higher DCR than 14 awg.

Since they spec the wire gauge I suspect they are expecting the inductor to have a certain resistance.

This is important to the final sound of the speaker so I would stick to whatever they suggest.

Odds are against it but if there is a resister in the same part of the circuit perhaps the value can be changed so the total resistence remains the same.

Yeah but it does seem silly to replace a part with one that is more expensive because it has lower resistance and then adding a resistor.

The only reasonable excuse to do that would be that the inductors are free ie he has already got them. In that case it be cheaper to buy a resistor than a new inductor.

You are correct, of course.

Since the woofer determines / limits speaker efficiency, having a lower resistance inductor can be of advantage on the low pass crossover side.

Anywhere else on a 3 way on up speaker it does not seem that lower resistance would be of benefit. Yet, I have not compared, so I could be missing something.

Further thoughts on the subject: It always amazes me that folks often say "I can really improve a crossover by larger gage wire, large gage inductors.....".

My advice always is that this can easily change the balance of the speaker, and one must be prepared to then use compensating resistors, as pointed out above. So, what so many folks think will be a no-brainer improvement might not be so.

Again, if the resistance is lowered to the woofer, then this can be a good thing as if is the efficiency limiter. But, in reality, how much efficiency can one gain? Likely very little I would think.

Higher quality wire, different matter. Higher quality components, different matter. But, what many folks think is higher quality may not be . I've listened to some 5 year old crossovers that work perfectly, measure fine, and have sounded absolutely fantastic. In that case, I don't change a thing.
