Hint: If I could afford, I'd buy Beauhorn Virtuoso.

Thanks!

I'm not exactly thrilled by seeing a round chunk of wood inserted into the center of a cone I am going to listen to.

But, I do think I understand this, shall we say, "coherency objective".

Start with a really, REALLY good mid range unit, get as much as you can from this mid range unit, but ONLY what it will give you. Trying to squeeze more from what she will give will surely result in rejection.

Add in your bass and highs. Have fun !

One other thought--you can give a look into Great Plains Audio's Altec 604 8h series 3 co-ax drivers. They have excellent sound quality and you only have to build a box or have someone build them for you. There are many box plans--just search this forum and google.

Raw Altec's are pricey (saw single one on ebay for $900!!) It wont do me any good - I need to be 'spoon fed' the way I built my watt/puppy clones some 15 years ago. I see a pair of virtuosos for sale on these pages. "only" $3.8K...that would make more sense.

Try Edgarhorn system. You just can't beat it. BTW, check out Asylum trader, horns. There is a complete system without the drivers that was inspired by Dr. Bruce Edgar and who was consulted about about the design and all. Alright, this is a shameless self-promotion, but the cabinets are really good.

See as how you said: "If I could afford, I'd buy Beauhorn Virtuoso." Why not build a pair of Woden Audio Vulcans? The plans are very reasonable and Scott is a great guy. I'd wager they'd sonically be right in your ballpark...

you could always build the PA speakers i'd like to put on my bicycle trailer system...

15" knockdown cabinets...
http://www.parts-express.com/pa-knock-down-trapezoid-plywood-speaker-cabinet-for-15-driver--245-326

15" MCM $42 sub...
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/MCM-AUDIO-SELECT-55-2963-/55-2963
these SEEM to have different baskets than "the same" priced 12" versions i bought (there's a higher priced 15" that seems to have the same basket, BUT a different paper gasket & what oddly looks like a stamped steel basket in the pic)

i'm not 100% sure WHICH one you should get. i'd suggest talking to them to CONFIRM specs, BUT, i can say this about the $42 12s i bought, they were AWESOME for the price!!! the had cast baskets, and a REALLY nice attention to detail quality where the forward edges of the basket were lathe machined down which added a few ridge ring details a junk speaker wouldn't bother with and the foam gaskets were extra high quality too.

one reviewer (of the 12"ers) CLAIMED the speakers didn't meet their efficiency rating, but i say "BS!" because they overpowered the 93dB dayton (MB quart) titanium tweeters i mated them too for a slightly midrange forward sound that wasn't as objectionable at volume.

if you get a 15" from the same series (i seem to remember the baskets didn't match what was pictured with my 12s), then you will have a REALLY high quality driver worth a few times its price in both attention to detail and sound quality. my 12s laughed 100 watts off as too easy with a nice loud and distortion free sound with much faster midrange than i would have given 12s credit for. the combo i put together with nice recycled 2 way cabinets was surprisingly HQ for the price with a laid back effortless sound that impressed this minimonitor fan. if you get a 15" from the same series, you'll have a quality base, that can do bass to build upon.

use a sealed 8" or 6 1/2" high efficiency closed back midrange like this celestion 8
http://www.parts-express.com/celestion-tf0818mr-8-professional-speaker-100w--294-2056
(i'm a fan of celestion now because of a nice sounding pair of 8" two ways i bought used and more recently because of the celestion based proel flash 8Ps i'm listening to right now that are surprisingly hi-fi for "PA speakers)

and finally, instead of using horns, take the hifi route and use a 95dB ("system limiting") air motion tweeter. APPARENTLY, the $73 generic version (Airborne RT-5002) of the $135 "sale priced" Aurum Cantus AST2560
is sold out at meniscus
http://meniscusaudio.com/airborne-rt5002-p-1494.html
$135 aurum cantus version
http://www.parts-express.com/aurum-cantus-ast2560-aero-striction-tweeter--276-440

using THAT instead of a horn and building your own crossovers using high quality parts should give you a really nice sounding full range system without horn spit & shout that could go toe to toe with klip$ch etc. and even prevail, especially in the highs.

if i were building a high efficiency speaker from scratch, that's the way i'd do it, short of building a 3/4" or even thicker braced cabinet & vertically stacking the drivers for better imaging, but i don't have the tools for that.

if not that, an 8" based SEALED "sweet sixteen" system, posted on November 12, 2016 at 02:56:20

i'm just not a fan of the distortions either ports or horns add to typical high efficiency systems. a while back, i was planning on building a DJ system based around 4 x 12" sealed subs, a total of 8 (4 per channel) 2 x 8" sealed car boxes (no longer available) using cheap dayton or poly drivers and a pyle JBL clone bullet tweeter for a "sweet 16" tri-amped system.

using 3dB boosts from doubling drivers for higher efficiencies makes more sense than using ports or horns which add distortion.

Eldragon,

Give a look at Jonh Inlow's site for some good info on diy plans / horns etc. Another good source is DIY Soundgroup. com for good, reasonably priced horns /wave guides etc. Good luck on your search.
