Anyone else have any hands on experience with this speaker?

I came across this interesting video of Steve Deckert of Decware. (Halfway down the page)

They certainly look promising and easy to build.

Oh, I almost forgot; Listen to the video with headphones.

Couple months ago I almost bought a a pair but then backtracked since I could not figure how a boxless speaker works. So many scientific studies have been made into the boxes and then this gentleman comes up with just a plank and almost faints into the sofa listening to a Jazz piece off it. It was indeed a lovely piece. I have so many planks lying around. Guess I will get an Eminence driver and build one.

I've used the stronger magnet/lower Qts version "BetsyK" - Graphs of BetsyK showed an on-axis peak slightly past 10KHz. Visaton's BG20 would be similar to Betsy K but a bit less extended on top - and probably rougher (but somewhat cheaper) - a couple of years ago BG20 were a bargain in the US at $23.50 each but that's now like $38 each

Yes, that would be the right way to do it: find out for yourself.

I mean, what's all this hooplah about the open baffle ?

Typical audiophile folklore:

The Speaker Box = EVIL
The Speaker Crossover= EVIL
High Power amplifiers= EVIL

So, now let's suppose you go through all this and find the results of an open baffle not much to your liking ?
When you report your negative findings back to the masses, you will be prompted persecuted.

I heard that plank. He was at the Capital Audiofest last year with his Betsy. Such a simple design and he was using a cheap CD player. It was one of the better sounding rooms at the show, go figure. He did have a bass driver setup for a little low frequency help and the flea watt amp was just OK but when he installed the little 2 watt Decware amp they really sounded good. Keep in mind they need to be out from the wall some.

Im going to buy a pair - what the hell.

For the price of per pair of a bar tab I have nothing to lose. plus, I have a lot of 1-3/8" maple butcher block doing Nothing.

Time to get into the shop and make some saw dust.

I built the folded wing with the Betsy a few years back, and love them. I did add a Ed Schilling bucket sub later on.

A friend who reviews for StereoTimes has a pair of the Caintuck (Decware) Betsy's in for review. His initial impression is that they punch WAY above their price point. I think he's enjoying them more than a few of the $2K+ monitors he has in house.

I contacted Randy at Caintuck, and Doug at Wild Burro. It seems that the Betsy is unobtainium at this time - 2 month backorder.
