Recently acquired a folded horn speaker from the original owner. He mentioned he built the speaker about 60 years ago from a kit and the driver is a Jensen coaxial. Diameter of the driver appears to be 12". True to its vintage, the original owner used this speaker in a pure 1 speaker mono system.

I suspect at the time of purchase speaker kits were popular which may impede identifying this one. Still, hoping someone has details about it. Is anyone familiar with this speaker? What company made it? Any and all details would be of interest.

I'll need to replace the rheostat that adjusts the volume of the upper frequencies (assuming the driver is a 2 way) or the midrange and above (if the driver is a 2 way). Any suggestions on what to use?

Thank you kindly for any information!

...a bazillion were sold as kits and sometimes pre-assembled. Could be loaded with any decent 12" full range. Also could load with 12" LF driver + mid horn and horn tweeter. You can see the cutouts for the mid and tweet in your photo.

Forgot to mention that info abounds on the web inc. typical loads w/EV drivers and xovers.

See, e.g., link below.
Their 'discontinued products literature' archive is a little tedious to search but to their credit (i.e., whomever owns the "EV" name nowadays) they still have a treasure trove of literature on line for... well, EV nuts like me.

Fortunately, we also have, thanks to a devoted individual, fairly complete archives of very cogent vintage catalogs at www.radioshackcatalogs.com and www.alliedcatalogs.com Look at early 1960s general catalogs and you'll find EV right up near the front of the speaker sections (talk about product placement!).

PS I'd love to have a one (or better yet, a pair) of Aristocrat enclosures -- I've yet to find one or two locally at a reasonable price.

all the best,
mrh

great & "musical" cabinet - (Stan Ricker liked them) - the weak part on mine were the front baffles which tend to flex. You can purchase adjustable L-pads from Parts Express. Being corner loaded, their system resonance drops a bit when shoved into a corner vs out in a room. They're loosely associated with Klipsch but don't know their real designer. The "Baronet" was the mini-version of Aristocrat.

Oh my--you guys have encyclopedic knowledge. Thank you kindly for providing these fab details about this speaker.

Mr. Hardy: Yeah, I agree, finding 2 of these speakers would be ideal. Due to a temporary down-for-the-count monoblock I spent time listening to 2 audio channels using one of my Altec Valencia's. Enjoyable, though use of both speakers is preferable. I'll have to be real lucky to find another similar Aristocrat.

Has anyone taken one of these enclosures apart and recall how they did that? I'd like to see what the component compliment is.

Thank you everybody who responded. Much appreciated!

The front "picture frame" molding is held in place by screws around the periphery of the top/bottom/sides. Remove these and the frame should come off cleanly. The frame hides a pile of screws that hold the baffle board in place. Remove these screws and the baffle with speaker load should fall out...so be careful at this point.

I can't tell how big it is from the picture. If it is small, then it looks like my father's Klipsch which I think was called a Short Horn. It held a 12" EV triax. At that time, people mixed and matched cabinets and divers. I still have it in storage, but the driver needs a new cone.

An update on this speaker. Thanks to Steve O it was a simple matter to examine the components inside the cabinet. This is a 2-way version of an Aristocrat. It has a 12" Jensen Model H222 coaxial manufactured in 1954 (with a horn upper range). It has a gorgeous clean end bell that is blue, white, and silver. As I did not want to remove the driver from the front baffle I but examined the rear of the speaker. And from that view the speaker was stunningly clean.

I have not had the time to use it. Though, I listened to it for a short time at the original owner's place with remarkable fidelity given his inexpensive system.

FYI: Cabinet height is close to 30 inches.

Thank you all who responded. Very much appreciated. Best regards!

There's a fellow at AK who apparently happened upon a quasi-matched pair of Jensen coaxes in EV Marquis enclosures recently: one enclosure has the H222 and the other, the very similar but more modern relatively speaking) SG222.

See link below (FYI & FWIW)

Funny how we seem to get these "motifs" sometimes... :-)

They're both nice looking drivers; how's it sound?

all the best,
mrh

Electro-Voice was bought out by the Telex Corp.some years ago. Telex made headsets for pilots. Electro Voice is now based in Burnsville MInnesota and makes and markets commercial and performance PA systems and amps.

I kind of had the impression that it may have changed hands again... but maybe that was just an assumption on my part based on changes in URL a while back (used to be one site to access both EV and Telex lines).

all the best,
