I found an old post where Bruce said the mouth of his 80hz FLH is 18.5" x 25". I don't know if that is external or internal. The math says you only need 428 sq in but Bruce's dimensions would yield 463 sq in (3/16 size, m=1). Anyone know real mouth area?

Jim

Hi Jim,

I don't know the answer to your question but I would suggest you take a look at John Inlow's various horn designs. I believe his mid bass horns would give better performance IMHO. John's entire site is an excellent read.

Just saw this post. The dimensions quoted are for the inside of the 80Hz horn. The mouth size is 3/16th of a full size 80Hz horn. Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Great to see you post! I hope you and your family are doing well.

Did you and EduardG ever get a chance to start that downward firing mid-bass horn article? I still find the concept remarkable.

I would like to ask you another question if I may. You mentioned that the mouth of your 80hz horn is 3/16 of a full size horn. In your testing did you hear a noticeable improvement in sound quality with a mouth that's 1/4 of a full horn?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Jamie

Wow! It's quite an honor to be mentioned on the same line with Bruce. No, I'm at best his student. But having rubbed elbows with Bruce over the last couple decades or so I think (I hope) I've rearned a few things. Yes, 1/4 may sound fuller than 5/16. How much of that will you hear? That depends on how well you hear. Some people claim that they can clearly hear differences in various brands of the same tube. Not me. Going beyond 1/4 size, when listening to music in an average size listening room, isn't really worth the effort because the horn will easily couple with room's bounderies, unless we're talking about really large halls. If you want to put a system in your backyard and you love woodworking, by all means, make it half size or bigger.

Thanks for the response Ed. I bet it would be hard not to know something about horns after hanging around Bruce Edgar for twenty years. :)

Hope you and your family are well.

Did you ever get your music server up? Sorry I didn't respond to your thread on it, but one just can't say the same things over and over, even though I did want to give you my opinion.

Build any new horns recently? How did you like those J horns you told me you built?

Hi, for now I decided to go with MacMini and Pure Music: it's cheap and really good. But Antipodes DS is definitely still on the agenda. As far as my horn system...there are many ways to slice a Salami. For me, my J-horn setup sounds the best and it also makes a lot of practical sense. Keeping bass horn at 80Hz allows for a small footprint (23"x23") It's then crossed over at 500Hz to a 300Hz midrange that goes all the way up to 10K where it meets with a superb Fostex tweeter. Below 80Hz you can go insane and build a 30-35Hz horn sub or, if you are an ordinary mortal, a simple 2 cub feet 12"-15" sub. Call me biased, but to my ears this setup sounds the best. And finally, my floor firing sounds really great in small rooms.

Hi Ed,

Yeah the mini is fine. Horn set up sounds cool. Definitely full range. I wouldn't be surprised if you are above 105db efficiency. I wish I could hear it.

Once you get the building bug you're doomed. I love woodworking and keep churning out horns without ever completing a system. People ask, Ed, why don't you get the drivers. complete the system and sell it. Well, audio is not a business for me, but a passionate hobby. I'd rather sell cabinets for very little money (as in almost at cost) just to move them to make space for another project. Something like that.
