I'm using a pair of 416Z (liberated from Valencias) in my Model 19-style enclosure/biamped system. GPA 902 hf drivers.

In an effort to improve the system, I am considering selling the 416's and buying new GPA units or send the 416's to GPA for a recharge or having GPA recone my units.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Alnico woofers sound better.

GPA can recharge the magnets without doing a recone.
Why do you think they need recharging? In home use they likely won't see the kind of abuse that would discharge the magnets unless you have dropped them.
What kind of crossover are you using to bi-amp?

I'm using a minidsp crossing at 1200hz, 24db L-R.

I have no idea if they need recharging. I guess couldn't hurt, may help. Maybe?

Can you add CD/horn compensation with the DSP? A straight crossover won't sound correct.
I have models 19s as well and also have a number of Altec 416 variants(8B, 8Z, 8C, 421s reconed with 416 cones, all 16" frames). To my knowledge none of them have been severely abused and they all measure within the normal spec range on my Woofer Tester II device. Just suggesting that you may not need to have your 416s recharged but you do need to incorporate the horn compensation in order to have the system sound balanced and correct. Are you using 811s with your 902s?

Thanks Kyle. The minidsp takes care of the HF boost. Yes I am using an 811b horn.

Unless you have heard vintage alnico, against the very latest GPA ferrite motors, one can't say that for sure.

All I am saying is, you should say " IME " .

Its fun to interact with you kiddo. I mass loaded my Type 45 amp with six bricks on end, last two nights, with neat results, can't go back to stock any more ~!! :-)

How can you tell if a driver needs a remag?

Measure the specs and compare them:

1) to each other
2) to the original published specs (if possible)

Alnico------ a mystic blessing, yet a known curse.

I found it can be calculated BL= Sqrt(2*pi*Fs*Mms*Re/Qes)
My calcs show a BL of 22 which I think is good. So no recharge is in my future.

The t/s parameters that govern the BL calc were close when I measured them a bit ago using a partsexpress W-2.

If you like the sound with the vintage cones, stick with what you have. I suppose a remag would not hurt anything (although I don't know for sure), but a new cone from GPA will sound different and probably for the worse. At least that's been my experience.

BL=(2*Pi*Fs*Mms*Re/Qes)^1/2 That last missing part of the equation would alter your BL product of 22 considerably.

Also, Altec's spec sheet shows a BL of 16 for the 416-8B, which is arguably the best sounding version of that speaker. Of the ones I have sitting around, they all seem to measure between 15 and 18 on a Woofer Tester 2, which you mention that you have used. Rather than calculate BL, why not just read the number off the results page. You used the numbers from WT2 for calculating anyway.

Yeah, I meant "sqrt" to be square root.
I did read them off the results, but the bl was higher than expected, so I ran the calc and got to the same place.

The 416Z is 16Ω, so the Bl should be 1.414 times the 8Ω version.

is for Fools Alnico doesn't need rechgarging unless they have been abused to the point where their voice coils have vapourised.
But urban myths and naive folks seem to flock together... a marriage made in Salesman's heaven.

I mentioned nothing about recharging, but since you bring it up............

Only a fool would not have a dropped Alnico compression driver re-charged.
