 Thought I would share an easy high efficiency speaker project that sounds really good.



I used the incredibly smooth sounding Tymphany BC25TG15-04 4 ohm 1" silk dome tweeter with several high efficiency 12" 8 ohm woofers like the Eminence Delta 12LFA, the PRV 12W700, and even the inexpensive 10" MCM 55-2951 with great success. The Zoebel network on the woofer is optional BTW. I suspect you could use the MCM 55-2952, the JBL 2206, or any high effiency (around 95-97db) woofer with good success. The woofer is run full range and is allowed to roll off naturally in a 3-5 cubic foot cabinet. I'm using a 48" tower cabinet of 5 cubic foot with a 4" port, 2.5" long.



I just can't say enough about this Typhany tweeter as it is really the star of this project. This world class tweeter is same one used in the Tekton Lore series of speakers to great effect. It is first order crossed over at 3000Hz, and it serves up loads of detail that is very addictive. I have bigger more expensive speakers, but I keep coming back to the clear, natural, open sound that these speakers make.

 Sweet and easy!

Using a 4ohm XdB tweeter to match with an 8ohm X+3dB midwoofer seems like a good way to cheat on efficiency.

What you have shown seems a little like the old Hammer Dynamics speaker.

 That's great. Thanks for posting your project. Often, speaker/crossover/amp projects can overwhelm a potential budding DIY'er. So, showing a simple project, with x-over layout, might encourage some folks to "get their feet wet".

About 25 years ago, I wanted to replace the drivers in an existing 2-way box. An electronics friend diagramed the x-over and spec'd the port/duct, and I ran with it. I still use those speakers, and they still sound great. 'Course, I'm not particularly proud of my x-over board layout, but hey... it works.

Recently, I was talking with an amp designer friend, and I admitted that I don't really understand how an amp actually works. Sure, it takes a little signal and turns it into a big signal. I get that. But, bias, negative feedback, input impedance, output impedance, noise floor, current supply, etc., and how to control them, elude me! In about two sentences, he gave me the big picture. Now, I'm kinda thinkin' about building a simple one, just to learn a little more.

 Yep, that's what these cabinets are from. I could never get the low/high balance right on the Hammers (the full range 12LTA), so I went with a conventional woofer (12LFA) and a good tweeter instead, MUCH better. These things are SWEET.

 Nice project but could be very low impedance at high frequencies, watch your amp! Tweeter looks good though :-) regards Philip
