Well, I'm building another pair of combination reflex cabinets on the bottom for the bass and open baffle on top for the full range and tweeter.

This time around I will be pairing a pair of Dipole RAAL Ribbon tweeters with a pair of Rullit field coil Aero-8 full range drivers (8") on the open baffles. The bass will be handled by using a 1.85 cubic foot reflex (3" duct port approximately ten inches long and bent internally at 90 degrees).

Since I am using a Pass Labs XVR-1 Electronic crossover and a Pass Labs XA30.5 amplifier, I am not highly limited as to the bass driver used. I chose the bass box size and duct port size because I have a nice pair of JBL 122A woofers on hand to try and so I built the bass reflex box to fit their needs.

However, I am a big fan of my pair of Tone Tubby drivers and have used them, accompanied by sub-woofers, in many Open Baffle formats. If the JBL woofers don't work out, then I really want to stick the Tone Tubby's in these reflex cabinets. However, I have had NO experience and have never yet heard of any one using them in a bass reflex application. Has any one
used a pair of these Tone Tubby's in a Bass Reflex Application?

Thank You.

Lance A.

If you are after accurate reproduction, I would not use any driver aimed at the guitar world. They usually have to many colorations for hi-fi use, especially ones like the Tone Tubby's, which are purposely designed to produce a desirable 'tone'. This is good for guitar users seeking a certain type of sound, but not for hi-fi. Stick to a driver made for accurate reproduction.

In order to have drivers commensurate with the expenditures you've made for other components in the proposed system you could have your choices of most woofers on the market. I would say that if the JBLs don't please you you should carefully research other options. The Tone Tubbys would not be my choice.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.

These speakers are best suited to open back cabinets or open baffle just take a look at the Qts of 0.8 that is too high for a bass reflex and the linear travel would require two per channel as well as a sub. I believe that these have been made to work well on a OB with helper sub why not that way four 12" woofers can kick what ever needs the boot. Best regards Moray James.

PS: for the most compact cabinet and the lowest tuning look for a woofer with a Qts of about 0.34.

Lance!

Hello my friend. I you're still experimenting with Oleg's Aero-8 drivers after all these many years! I can still remember when you and I first exchanged emails about Oleg and these drivers, way back in 2011 or 2010 IIRC. That's when I purchased a pair of his horn tweeters & tried a pair of his ICs. I'll be very interested in reading your impression of this speaker's sonics when it's finally assembled and all the "bugs" are worked out. Good luck with this project and I hope the final product exceeds all your sonic expectations!

Good to hear from you.

It's actually about seeing what I can get out of the JBL 122A's in a combination reflex/open baffle setting. The Tone Tubby's were just a fall back. But, the JBL's have turned out to offer every bit the fabulous bass that I remembered from when I used to sell them as part of the JBL L112, 166's and the L65 Jubals back at my Salon in the 70's. The Rullit drivers are only there to play their role.

I agree w the other posters: the Tone Tubby is not the way to go.

But would love to find a Hemp Cone 10" or 12" that is. Something along the line of the Audio Notes or a mod to a suitable Altec (414?) or other driver.
