Since you have been making an appearance here lately I have a question about my beloved SEISMICS.

Trying to coax the bottom octave out of the SEISMICs is not working in my room and I worry tends to spoil the 40 to 100 hz range.

To remedy I built a subwoofer using the RYTHMIK servo woofer/amp. In a four cubic foot box and used below 40 hz it blends really well with the SEISMICS. Rolling the SEISMICs off at 40 definitely sounds better.

I am in the midst of building a second box since I do believe stereo should be stereo from top to bottom.

The question: I figure the box behind the woofer has been made larger to effect some first octave response. If one no longer needs the SEISMIC to do this would there be an advantage in making the volume smaller? I guess that it would but would have no idea where to begin and it is not easy to remove and re-install the boxes so I would like to minimize the number of times this might need to be done.

Is there a good place to start? What do you think the range of volumes would be for best 40 to 100 hz response?

I would greatly appreciate your advice!

Glad to see you back on the forum.

Take care,

What you described may very well be a symptom of problem with a floor of your listening room and not necessary with a speaker. Just taking a qualified guess.

I have been using these for over 15 years. They are atop the suggested sand boxes since they are on a suspended floor.

I have tried boosting the lowest octave and it screws up the sound for the whole range the SEISMICs are asked to reproduce. Not that the SEISMICs are anemic but when it comes to really low tones they are much lower in level than the rest of the spectrum. More is left to the imagination than I would like.

I have one of the mentioned subwoofers working and there is no comparison in what is happening in the lowest octave. It is there, demonstrably there. No imagination needed. And with the SEISMICs cut off at 40 they are much happier and the sound has lower distortion. No surprise there.

Hence the desire to optimize the SEISMICs - seems to me there is no need for the extra back chamber volume since there is no need for them to respond below cut-off. One would think a smaller volume would give better damping of the cone.

Still hoping Dr. Edgar will give me a starting point for the back chamber volume!

I should mention I like listening at 90 - 95 db for peaks - not at too loud levels. Though there are some who might think that is too loud.
