Stan White's Page with Duke Ellington's endorsement

one of Stan's secrets from page above on winning the spl war on the $1000 bet

"Everyone was there. We offered a $1,000.00 to anyone who could beat our 4D on an A-B test with an audience. The test was rigged--We had a 500 Wt. McIntosh (outdoor theater amp). No other speaker at the show could handle that much power."

Julian Hirsch and Audio League team reviews the Acoustic Research AR-1 speaker, ("The 755A is in the $25 class.."- lol) Karlson's little Scott tube amp is trounced at the 1955 fair by Stan White's 200 watt amp

Odd. I have curves on the Hartsfield.. by today's standards they are tough to beat.
I can not imagine anyone not liking a JBL 375.

Very odd.

If you come across a Weathers speaker, I would be very interested to see curves.

Thank you Freddi!

I've not had the pleasure to hear the Hartsfield - it is odd that the Karlson's (including the little 8" model) received better press from those fairs than the Hartsfield- - ah! - I found another short reference to the Hartsfield in Vol.1, No.2 November 1954 "The Audio League Goes To The Fair" and will scan today

re:Weathers- i've only a limited amount of Audio League's remaining in the little collection - there's tests of cartridges and mid-priced amps - I'm not sure what's in them yet as they're easier to read on-screen for me. I had some Audiocraft but no-one seemed interested in those (mainly subjective reviews) and those may be lost now. Overall The Audio League looks better than some later "audiophile" rags, and more venom IIRC (?) than Julian Hirsch's Stereo Review work. BEST, Freddy

...any of those fabulous Fifties Stan White speakers? They look like huge Lowther Acoustas.

Brian.

I did the factory mod on my 15" Karlson. Using a Tannoy Dual Concentric Monitor Silver the lower resonance dropped to 25 Hz, confirmed with my Heathkit frequency counter. Unfortunately, I did not check the unmodified enclosure. The Tannoy has a free air resonance of 35 Hz.
