So I have the original Sony SCD-1, but it bit the dust a couple of years ago. I can play CDs on another player, but my SACD collection goes unplayed.

I've moved on, as has the world, and most of my music is through the computer these days. But I'd still like to be able to play SACDs and who knows, maybe even buy some more recent ones.

So the SCD-1 is dead, and I don't think I can fix it myself, and I'm thinking a new player might be worth buying. I just read a review of a T+A player in one of the mags, but at 23K dollars, I'm not getting that. The article did mention they made a 4K model, and suggested checking it out. So there's that. I think Marantz still makes players. I know Oppo does. But the list seems pretty short these days. I was wondering if anyone has a recent player that they really think is worth checking out.

I bought an Oppo BDP-105D a couple of years ago. After I got used to it, I think it sounds very good. I don't have many SACDs but I have just over 1000 albums in DSD 2.8M and some of them sound awesome on the Oppo. I certainly think the Oppo is worth its very reasonable price of $1300. Of course, there's a new Oppo coming out next month, which is probably worth waiting for.

If you folllow John Elison's advice you get a double whammy. Not only does it play SACDs but it can also be used to rip the DSD information from the SACD so it can be stored as a computer file which you say is how you like to play your music these days.

Just Google: ripping SACD with Oppo.

Another approach for an SACD player ( rather than a multi-format player that plays SACDs) is one that I have actual experience of from Marantz. My friend bought an SA8005 about 2 years ago . It is still in the current Marantz catalogue, at least here in the UK. I listen to it fairly regularly. Very good for the price indeed. They do have more costly models if your budget runs to that.

I have the Marantz SA-11S3. I've had it for about a year now, and its quite good with both CDs and SACDs. It lists for $4K, has balanced out and a fair number of digital inputs. Built like a tank. The sound is smooth, detailed and a bit laid back. No listener fatigue after hours of listening. I highly recommend it.

if you enjoy the Sony "sound"- pick up a 5400ES spinner.

Also the 3100ES. Obsolete as a video player but for strictly CD/SACD it's a great sounding machine. Can be had very cheap, but the OP shouldn't be dissuaded by a near give-away price. I don't think people know how great these last generation Sony players really are.

The Marantz SA-10 is being launched in Jan 2017 for about $8K. You might want to wait and audition one and see if that is the direction you want to go.

Wow! I hope everything is okay with Oppo. I'm looking forward to their new Sonica DAC. I wonder why they are no longer selling anything?

They aren't selling any universal players because they ran out of stock on the current models (103, 105) and are about to introduce a new 4K player. AFAIK there is nothing wrong at Oppo. They still have their other products on sale.

actually i agree with barach, the new model is coming in december but i think someone bought their remaining 105s and 103s and is trying to capitalize on that fact.

i am waiting for the new model and even if it is a bit higher than the 1200 they were asking for the 105, i will be damned (probably will anyway) if i will help the other schmuck profit!

agreed- anything over $1K is too much for an Oppo.

That's rather interesting if someone bought all the remaining stock with the intention of raising the price. I guess I don't see the logic since any intelligent person will want the new model or else they will want a discount on the discontinued old model. Who in their right mind would pay extra for a discontinued model that is being replaced by an upgraded model. If, on the other hand, the old model is not being replaced, then Oppo will soon have additional stock at the regular price for anyone who still wants the older model. It seems to me that whoever bought a bunch of the older model with the intention of raising the price might have made the WRONG decision. What do you think?

Anyway, my concern is for the new Oppo Sonica DAC. It is supposed to be priced at $799 according to the following YouTube clip from RMAF. It sounds like a very versatile component that combines a DAC/preamp and a streamer with the ability to connect a USB drive directly. I hope it comes out on schedule at the advertised price because I'm ready to buy one. ;-)

My Pioneer Elite DV45A finally got to the point where it would only play CD's so I scrapped it and bought a Yamaha BD-1060A. Very good, plays all forms of shiny disks, as well as connected USB drives, Network attached storage, and Wifi streams from laptops, phones, pads, etc. I think the SACD sound is great. and the price is right - probably $500 US.

Chuckster-

I see that you are in Raleigh NC. I love Audio Advice and Audio/Video Excellence, which ironically, are across the street from one another.

I have had some outstanding listening sessions w/ Mel (AA)
and Ryan (A/VE).

are you selling your 5400ES? If so, which model will be its replacement?

I also have the SA11-S3 and agree with all of the above. It replaced my Sony SCD777ES, and sounds much better in all ways. If you shop around, you can probably find a new Marantz for about $3200. Also, the now discontinued Yamaha CD-S2000 is a worthy contender and used ones occasionally show up on Audiogon for less than $1000. I have a S2000 as a backup for the sad day when my Marantz dies and SACD players become unobtainable.

Absolutely! sleeper.
I am impressed w/ the specs on the Yamaha S3000 cd/sacd spinner.
Whenever I am researching a cd/sacd player, I look for the signal-to-noise
ratio. Higher number(s) are better in sound and presentation.

Don't know if anyone is reading this thread anymore. I have an Oppo 105 that I bought because of limited rack space. I plan on sending it Music Technology when funds are available for their SteadiClock and Jfet analog signal path upgrade ($1800 for unbalanced, $2400 for balanced). I had them mod my Sony 5400 with the latest at that time VSE mod. One reviewer stated this mod trumped the VSE mod, which was very good.

I have the Yamaha CD-S1000

it is a good player, transport to die for and built like a tank.

There are also higher end models above the 1000.

I had to read Japanese to learn about it, but if you live in the USA it is available here as well.

there has never been a better time to buy a SCAD spinner.
If you enjoy the Sony sound- seek out the 5400ES.

as far as I know 5400ES no longer available. The low cost Sony 4K Blu-Ray player X800 almost as good for mch SACD maybe as good when fully run in, has to be connected to TV via AVR.
