PlayClassics is a small company run by Mario Martinez, a Spanish recording engineer.
You donate a small amount and download a 24/96 FLAC

I tried the Albinez recording.
This is solo piano.
It sounds very natural to me, indeed almost live like.

I got the Albeniz and Preludes. Very nice. You can choose the amount to donate.

I thought the performance was very good, but there are a huge number of excellent Debussy Preludes recordings these days - even a couple of others in 24/96 by bigger names (Koroliov and Bavouzet). Of course, a bigger name by itself doesn't guarantee a better performance, but the competition IS fierce.

As for the SQ, it seemed to have an emphasis in the mid-bass region that other recordings don't have (at least on my system). In view of the good reports about the other free samples in this thread, I'll try a couple of others.

BTW, thanks for the heads up - I believe I'd seen this site years ago and then somehow forgotten about it without downloading any of the free samples.

...and had EXACTLY the same impression about the piano sound. It was a bit dark sounding. Maybe its that particular instrument. I compared it to Bavouzet's recording of the same piece (a RBCD quality download) and his instrument had a bit more upper octave sparkle. I preferred Bavouzet's performance. Both pianos (which sound like Steinway's) sound very good to me.

and thanks for the link.

You're right about "lifelike". I'll be adding more of Martinez's work to my library.

Hi everybody,

This is Mario Martinez from PlayClassics.

First of all I would like to thank Roseval for opening this thread. And all of you for taking the time to listen. I really appreciate it. :)

I have noticed some of you have downloaded the demo of the Debussy Preludes by Enrique Bernaldo de Quirós. That album was recorded on 2012 before we finished building our setup. The sound quality on that album is NOT consistent with the sound quality of all our other albums. If you want to try the sound of the Truthful Recording Technology (calibration v2.0) you can go ahead and download any of the other demos.

Actually, what I would like to do (since we are currently holding a master file giveaway at other audiophile forums), is open a thread to offer that master file giveaway here at AA.

I concur about the sound of the piano on the Debussy recording....more mid bass than I am accustomed to, somewhat less treble sparkle, but a very very natural feeling about the placement of the instrument in space. Since tonal balance can vary depending on where one sits in the hall, I was not bothered a bit by this. I enjoyed the interpretation quite a bit too.

Mario:
Thanks for this. I would love to participate but am not quite sure of the instructions to obtain these downloads.
I would like the Albeniz and the Songs of Paolo Tosti. Please clarify what I need to do to obtain the gift codes as I saw no reference to this on the site
Thanks
Lee
