with top notch sonics? Were they recorded recently? Are they part of a cycle?

Thanks,

Pete

wish the old SACD.net site was still operational, hr.net IMO is virtually useless

"hr.net IMO is virtually useless" - Yup, that's the truth - What a waste of a formerly good site [nt], posted on August 11, 2016 at 08:53:12

It's Concertos 3 - 5. If you demand a DSD recording, it won't suffice though.

I am curious as to how much traffic the site gets now, posted on August 12, 2016 at 16:22:58

There seem to be 4 or 5 people who post comments regularly, but of course nothing like the lost lamented sacd.net. Still, it's the easiest way to see what new SACD's are coming out.

I'm sure that if site traffic has declined, Stephen would never admit it, though.

There are the excellent #2 & #4 by Steven Kovacevich and Davis on PentaTone 4-channel SACD. Many think Kovacevich owns these concertos. All five are still on Philips with adequate sound. PentaTone is increasing their Philips releases on SACD so I am hoping to get 1, 3, & 5.
I was luck enough to hear this pair do #5 live and it was one of my all time favorite concerts. It was in Houston, and Steven (Bishop at that time) had such dynamic range that the cowboys had to take their boots off the railings and listen hard.

...and they are excellent. Great performances from all involved and great recorded sound too. Four & Five are coupled together (BIS-1758) and Three is coupled with the Mozart C minor Cto 24 (BIS-1978). I expect they'll get around to completing the set at some point. Including the Mozart in with LvB #3 (instead of the boring Choral Fantasy) provides a very interesting contrast between these two great composers both working in the key of C minor. Highly recommended!

I have not heard his Beethoven concertos, or sonatas, but I think he has completed both cycles with BIS on SACD. I am a fan of his Mozart and Haydn sonatas.

In addition to the recordings others have mentioned, here are some more. I haven't heard any of them:

3&5: Ax, Tilson-Thomas SFSO (recent recordings)
3&5 Eschenbach, Ozawa BSO (older recordings, re-released on Pentatone)

All 5: Mustonen, Tapiola Sinfonietta
