With all the talk of other labels (Channel?) pulling the plug on SACD, it seems Pentatone, judging by the rapidly accelarating pace of new releases, is going strong.

Pentatone has such a long tradition of excellence. They were the recording arm of the legendary Phillips Classics label. When the label stopped recording in the late 1990's (after the Universal merger) the recording team staged an employee-buyout, where they bought all their recording equipment and struck out on their own re-christened as Pentatone, with the mission of recording in DSD multi-channel.

In the past seventeen years Pentatone has become one of the premier SACD recording companies with a strong commitment to the format and multi-channel recording. Pentatone has in just a decade and a half created a rich and varied catalog of recordings, both new recordings and multi-channel releases of older analog recordings.

Furthermore, the quality of their output has been going from strength to strength. I was blown away by the new Pentatone recording of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Firebird Suite conducted by Andres Orozco-Estrada and featuring the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. After a subtle start, Andres built the pieces musical strand by musical strand into masterpieces of earth shattering power and beauty! I have never heard a more thrilling or realistic sounding recording of these works.

Moreover, I have been deeply impressed by Pentatone's recent quadrophonic releases of repetoire as varied as Kempff's magnificent Liszt recital, Echenbach's performace of Beethoven Concerti and Vasary's performance of Mozart Concerti. I am excited that these legendary recordings are being released in quadrophonic sound (most for the first time)!

With their strong schedule of new releases and quad re-releases, Pentatone has embraced multi-channel SACD and run with the format! I cannot thank them enough!

I would also like to plug the current Pentatone Sale at Arkiv music. By supporting the label, we will ensure that all those new SACD releases keep coming from Pentatone.

. . . on the "patronage" business model. ;-)

etc.

In this respect, I think Mr. Getty is the opposite of composer Ernest Chausson, who actually suppressed performances of his own music because he felt that his wealth gave him an unfair advantage over other composers of his time, and he (Chausson) also felt that if his music were really compelling for audiences, it would survive in the repertoire without the infusion of his additional cash! ;-)

In any case, I believe I read that Pentatone's operational structure was written up in the Harvard Business Review. It's a nice business model as long as it lasts - assuming you can get it established in the first place! ;-)

Getty said in an SF Chron interview that he was finding it easier to get his works played. , posted on May 12, 2016 at 10:09:47

Too true. I buy their recordings for the hi-res content -- and particularly, they have access to some superb late analogue material with outstanding artists. One of these is the new Kreisler release on SACD of Shlomo Mintz: outstanding sonics and outstanding performance.

We will certainly miss GG when he and his money is gone and the new rich are no where to be found when the Opera and Symphony come calling.

One Usher House or two every few years plus a short work now and then at the Symphony is a small price to pay.

The Jazz and Chamber Music Concerts I've attended ( and played )
have almost exclusively middle aged and up in attendance.
Similar at ACT too.

Also worth a listen.

Unique take on Dvorak. Especially the 7th.

There's also a 20%-off sale going on at Primephonic.com, which is the download-store arm of PentaTone, for those of us into downloads. (You know who you are!) Oddly enough, the Orozco-Estrada Rite of Spring is only available as a 44.1/16 download (it's listed as an original hi-res PCM recording on PentaTone's site) while his other 2 Dvorak albums (one of them mentioned by Ivan303 below) are available as full-fledged DSD downloads.
