This is a 24/96 download. It sounds incredibly good. I can only imagine how sick a 24/192 version would be. Too bad they didn't.

The original 1986 CD sounds excellent. It would be of interest to hear wether or not it could be bettered in SACD?

in that the LP sounds better than the cd, it seems logical that the hi-rez file would as well.

Sure does.

I liked the big shot of Billion Dollar Babies. I have the Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits album in 24/192, and your post made me want to test it even more.

My Billion Dollar Babies was just a CD rip I did on my own that sounds pretty good but probably not quite like a 'hi-res' version.

Abe-

did you rip the DVD-Audio version?

Hmmm...pretty clear 44.1 cutoff in there, posted on October 29, 2015 at 09:50:55

The wiki page indicates the tracking was done to tape but was converted to digital for editing (mixing too? doesn't say). Only had 44.1 in 1985/6 I believe.

This release already sounds fantastic on CD. These graphs make it look like the hi-rez versions don't buy you much over the CD release. Looks like it went back to tape at some point but you can't get rid of the 44.1 ADC step in there.

Did you have a particular song you want to discuss, or look at closer?

Every song except Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes shows the telltale sign of 44.1k sampling somewhere in the production process, but it's clear that this isn't simply an upsampled 44.1k master. If it were, then the noise floor would be much lower above 22 KHz. But I can clearly see analog noise above 22 KHz in every song.

This album was put together from a large number of analog recordings made at different studios with different equipment and then digitally edited. It looks like most or all of the tracks in the mix went through a 44.1k conversion for processing/effects in the digital domain. I'm not sure if the 25th Anniversary edition was remixed or just remastered. If it was remixed, then possibly they did a fresh hi-res transfer of some analog tracks and mixed them with some of the old 44.1k digital tracks. Or if it was just remastered, then they might have started from an old analog master tape made back in the 1980s (which followed all the digital editing).

I have the original CD and the 25th Anniversary version and I prefer the original CD because it's more dynamic.
