I just took delivery of my 2016 Audi S6 - sweet car. But the icing on the cake was to discover the B&O sound system plays full 192/24 audio files, both flac and wav. Files can be accessed via usb ports, or from two SD slots, each supporting 256 G cards. I read that it also supports surround Hi-rez, but have not tested.

I quickly copied a good chunk of my Hi-rez library to SD cards, and the sound is outstanding. For those who maintain that the benefits of hi-rez over 44/16 can't be appreciated in an automobile environment, think again. And if you're test-driving a new Audi (with B&O system) make sure you take along a few files for audition.

Glad to hear Audi has done an upgrade; the B&O system on my 2010 Audi would only play mp3 files (not even wav) from SD cards.

Yes, the S6 is a very sweet car!

My 2013 BMW 335xi offers direct digital access to it's car audio system DAC via the Lightning connector from an iPhone or iPod Touch. In other words, I can bypass the iPhone/iPod internal DAC and analog stage completely and feed a digital signal direct from the iPhone/iPod to the USB port inside the arm wrest. It will also display album art on the Nav screen and take voice commands to control playback.

So far I've only tried 16/44 and 24/44 AIFF or ALAC files through the USB port via the iPhone/iPod and it sounds great. [Edit 16Sept: Just tried 24/96 AIFF and it plays fine]. I also stream Spotify, Pandora, or Amazon Music in the car.

I should try putting hi-res files on a USB stick and see what happens. There's also a USB port in the glove box that allows music file transfers from a USB stick to the extra space in the car's Nav system hard disk.

These car infotainment systems keep getting better but instead of relying on the auto makers who are always a couple years behind, my next car will have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto by Google for tighter integration of the smartphone with the car infotainment system. I believe that's the direction the auto industry is going.

I haven't tried a USB drive in my car, just a USB stick, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

My wife's Honda plays AIFF from her iPod Classic (160GB) but we haven't tried 'hi-res' on it.... or a USB hard drive.

IMHO, unless the car is dead silent (which hardly any are) I think "cd quality" is more than sufficient provided the recording is good. There's going to be road noise and I prefer listening to the exhaust note when I stomp on it. ;-)

One shouldn't be using the words 'car' and 'audio' in the same sentence.

With one exceptions.

Orey Block's Cadillac.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

I agree, but I'm too lazy to convert the file I copy to play in her car.
